Does your surgeon require you to take a laxative the day before surgery? Mine says to do a clear liquid diet the day before and at noon take a bottle of citrate of magnesia

I didn't have a pre-op diet or a bowel prep for my sleeve surgery, but I did have to do a bowel prep for my hysterectomy years ago.

I just did the 2 week liquid diet, then only Clear liquids for the last day. But every surgeon is different. Follow your doctor's advise!

Nope. I think his philosophy for sleeve patients is that he's not going anywhere near their intestines, so no need to clean them out. No liquid diet either -- just two weeks of high protein/low carb to shrink the liver beforehand.

Oh yes, I will most definitely follow his orders!

some folks say the 1 or 2 weeks of liquid diet prior to surgery is your bowel prep.

I didn't have the pre-op diet, but I was on all liquids post op. Trust me when I say it is NOTHING like the bowel prep you do when you have to drink a bottle or citrate mangnesia

Yes, I was asked to take a laxative before surgery. My surgery was a Sunday and I was asked to take a laxative with Water on Saturday night with Water and consume nothing but water after that. I actually took a laxative on Friday, before my Saturday morning flight - just to make sure.

As the others have said, each surgeon has his/her own requirements.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
