Hello. I am new to this site and have a question. If someone in your family has lupus can you still be a candidate for lapband surgery? Thank you!

Hi. I have Lupus SLE and I was banded in November. My Dr. wanted to see my blood tests first to make sure I wasn't in the midst of a major flare up during surgery, and that was that. I never did have a flare up in reaction to the operation, and although it certainly hasn't made my Lupus better, the losing weight has sure helped with the severe arthritis pains Lupus hands me. And with less weight, I can exercise more...also good for me and my Lupus.

Thank you for your replies. I don't have lupus but my mother does. I am considering the lapband (doing my research) and she read that people with lupus or family with lupus were not candidates for lapband. I believe she is just afraid for me but I believe the surgery is the best thing I can do for myself. I will talk to my dr. Thanks again!

Wife has serious lupus-Flares during hot weather-Soon to be banded-never even discussed by her doctor-My thoughts are that MOST LUPUS people can be treated the same as everyone else-Always tell Doc everything if you get any procedure done-

I am currently having a flare up. The only thing I notice is that when I'm sick, my band restriction is greater so I lose a bit more weight ;-) Much better than the old days when the Lupus meds gave me horrible cravings and I GAINED weight!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
