Constipation...and heartburn.. at 7 weeks?

I am having a problem with constipation. I am at 7 weeks and have had this problem for about the last three. Can't figure out yet if it is caused by gummy Vitamins (double dose) but they don't have Iron so probably not from them. Also taking Calcium Citrate every day so that could be the cause, according to my GP. Drinking my Water so I don't think that is the problem. I am trying to take Meta Mucil every day and avoid Colace but I just can't seem to get regular. Also, heartburn is worse than ever. I take Omeprazole every morning but now have to take Zantac at night -- per the advice of my GP. Didn't expect these problems. Expected nausea.. but never have that!

  • Why are you trying to avoid colace? I was put on it for the forst 30 days post op. Had my first BM 3 days after I was discharged from the hospital and have been regular ever since. How many mgs of o

  • Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear I am not the only one with the heartburn problem. I may ask about increasing my dosage of Omeprazole.. I am taking a pretty low dose I think. I was avoiding both

I take 40 mg of Nexium and 20 mg of Prilosec each morning and then 20 mg Prilosec before bed. I also keep Rolaid chews, Tums and Gas-X with me all the time. I get acid in my throat/nose every night I sleep in a recliner at 45 degrees. I've asked about this at my support group and I was told it could last up to 6 months post op, but will eventually stop.

I'm finally getting regular, but I've used the vegetable stool softeners/laxative since surgery out of necessity. Hopefully I'm past that stage.

You're not alone. These are just a couple of the complications that you hear about before surgery but can't truly appreciate until you have them. Good luck.

He said double the dose of the PPI.

I had diarrhea initially, but 3 days ago went to loo and worst constipation ever, started on laxatives. Learned a lesson, diarrhea is better than constipation.

I'm a little over 2 months post op and constipation is a big issue this last week. I take miralax daily in my water and just recently added magnesium supplements. I've had some relief but not enough. Very frustrating.

I was started on colace in the hospital. I was discharged on Saturday and had my first BM on Monday. Not a great one, but I went. I was kept on colace for the first 30 days post-op and have been regular since (at least once a day). They were just never as how should I say it? Robust as they used to be. I just figured this was the new way things would be. Well I switched to Isopure unflavored Protein powder this week. I eat a mostly "clean" diet. I am 4 mths out and I've noticed this week that things are back to normal. Nice, healthy BMs.

Hang in there folks. There's hope that as you return to a regular diet, things will returned to normal.
