My nutritionist told me that just losing weight will shrink your liver.

Pre-op I was told just to avoid fatty foods. I'm actually not sure what reduces a fatty liver.

So my pre-op diet is the same diet that RNY patients need to follow for 2-3 months post op (we call it stage two, some call it post op or soft?) two weeks of it, and the reason is twofold: 1) get used to how you will have to eat post op and 2) shrink your liver. I know once I have my new pouch I will do just fine eating what I am supposed to eat. I am, quite literally, dizzy with the lack of food and am now entering "run down catching a cold" stage which always, in the winter months, leads to bronchitis. Which will lead to surgery postponment... My surgery is scheduled 1/19.

That's the reason I was asking. I just want to be able to eat *some* real food to keep my strength up for surgery, but also don't want to not shrink my liver.

Thanks for all of your input :)

Can you take emergent-c or something to try to ward off the cold?

I called the RN today, actually, because when I feel it coming I drink emergen-c all day long (usually 6-7 packets!) and also take zicam. There's fructose in emergen-c, so that's a no go. I got airborne, which I don't care for the taste but I'll deal. Also got zicam fast melts, so I'm taking that as well. I'm glad i got sick now because I wouldn't have thought twice about using emergen-c post-op, I only inquired because of all the Vitamins that I would be consuming so close to surgery. I'm sure it would have caused dumping post-op!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
