A new attitude

Recommended Posts

I figured I'd post this here as I'm sure other veterans can relate. I was banded in 2008 and over the next year lost 106 pounds from 326 to 220. I was looking and feeling better than I had in years. Then the wheels came off. same old story divorce, lost job etc. caused me to lose focus, become depressed and of course cheat my band. fast forward to the present. I gained all the weight back and then some and finally decided I needed to go back and see the doc. I told him the band wasn't working so we agreed to unfill and try and revise to the sleeve. My insurance denied the request which was both a blow and a blessing. I've decided to give the band another shot and get back on the horse. I've had one fill so far and am seeing the nutritionist. Down 10 pounds in 2 weeks and have my mojo back. I came here to find support and encouragement as I start chapter 2 of my journey. This time I am sticking with it no matter what!

Congratulations and welcome back !!! Sounds like you've got your personal train back on track with a great attitude too ! I think an "I can do it " attitude is soooo important. Good for you ! As far as a "blow and a blessing?", whats the name of that Garth Brooks song ? Unanswered Prayers ? I think you're going to be very successful in getting back a strong , healthy body. Good luck! !!

How did you cheat the band, without suffering sever side effects such as pain, getting stuck, severe reflux, etc?

You were banded a few years before me, so maybe there is something coming I have not experienced yet?

Where the band stops being the band?

This is just the post I needed to read! God puts us in a place on a certain day to hear what he wants us to hear. I have been at the successful place for about 4 1/2 years but the last few weeks I have had some lack of control. Almost like I have been doing this so long I can just not pay close attention to the manual. Well your struggle has put my focus back on track. Thanks for coming in and being honest about how things are changing for you. There is no real reason for my lack of focus unlike you.... sounds like your life had many lemons all of a sudden. So happy you have decided to give the band a new vigorous try. I have joined an accountability group here and I think just reporting my day is going to help. It is a Veteran group so hop in if you feel it would be helpful. Happy you are back on track. Ten pounds in 2 weeks ... doing the happy dance for you!

Oh I had the side effects. I was eating high calorie foods (chips ice cream etc.) and drinking with meals. I had all but given up. The band does work if used correctly. But as the old adage says "you can lead a horse to Water but you can't make him drink". I am now reborn and have cut all sugars and starches from my diet. I do need another adjustment or two to find my sweet spot and I'll be good to go. I've found you can prepare some tasty meals without carbs or at least very low carbs. And once motivated exercise feels much better than a bloated tummy.

I love it when people are honest. I know I have needed help, but I felt so frustrated at times. It seemed like EVERYONE BUT me was losing lots of weight and making miraculous progress. It is very encouraging to see you doing so well after a period of discouragement. Keep up your healthy choices!!

Update: Went in for a fill today. Down 18 pounds in just under a month. Can definitely feel some restriction now. Now to get back to a regular exercise routine. I go back in 6 weeks and really want to lose 25-30 pounds by then.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
