what is the pain like?

Recommended Posts

Right after surgery... Is the pain like incision pain or deep inside abdominal pain? And anyone who has gotten gallbladder removed WAY BEFORE the WLS surgery.. Is the pain similar to that??

I had my gallbladder removed in 2010 and had sleeve surgery in December 14.

My pain right after surgery was really only in my large incision. I have not really had any pain from my stomach besides a mild discomfort when I drink or eat too quickly. I would say the gallbladder pain was fairly similar but I have had a little more pain in my largest incision than I did in any of my gallbladder incisions.

I never really had incision or stomach pain. It was more of an intense pressure. When I woke up in the recovery room, I knew exactly how the guy in 'Alien" felt - right before the critter popped out of his chest!

But I'd do it all again in a second!! :D

For me, gallbladder (7 years ago) was way worse. After sleeve surgery, I didn't really have much pain at all and what I did have was mostly just the gas pain. My incisions were very slightly tender, but not really painful. I couldn't even tell you which incision was the one they removed the stomach through because none of them really hurt. And I had no deep abdominal pain at all. I was one of those who wondered if the surgeon actually did anything because my stomach never hurt. Still never has. Realistically, I know he did because I can't eat much, but as far as bring able to feel it? Nope, not a bit.

I feel the opposite. I don't remember waking up from my gall bladder surgery in pain, and I was with the sleeve. My right side where the big incision was...OUCH. After I got meds, I was good. Just minor discomfort for a couple days after. No biggie :)

The first few days it felt like I did a lot of sit-ups, I had more soreness on one side. I had a few spasms for a week or so after surgery but I didn't take pain medicine after I came home from the hospital.

I guess I was lucky. I used the pain meds at the hospital once and that was so I could get some sleep. They keep you up half the night going for walks and taking blood. Told the doctor later that I have had worse paper cuts. Didn't have any campaigns either. Reality was much better than my fears.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
