No drinking while eating... forever?

Recommended Posts

I totally get why they tell sleevers to not drink while eating, but is this a permanent thing?

I like spicy stuff, and in general like sipping on something while I eat (usually Water, but love milk too) and it is very sad to me if that is how it is to be for the rest of my life.

I'd get over it, but the spicy stuff is probably a no-go if I can't drink something with it. :(

(and apologies if this has been asked/answered many times before - searched but nothing popped up)

I had the RNY bypass and although I am only 4 weeks post-op, I am able to take small sips while I eat. It's really just enough to wet my mouth. I have always been a big Water drinker at all times so that has been one of the more difficult things for me. My mom is 9 years post-op and she has no problem having a little to drink with her food.< /p>

When I eat something spicy, I do rinse the inside of my mouth, but that is probably just a tablespoon. In the old days I would eat a huge plate of food, go back for seconds, AND drink a quart of Pepsi. My stomach must have been as big as a basketball. I love my itty bitty sleeve.

This is something I've been wondering as well. Sucking on ice sounds like a good idea.

How long did you guys wait to try something spicy after being sleeved?

It's a forever change. My cousin had her surgery 3 -4 years ago and still follows this step. Sorry :( my nut did advise that during a meal should you "need" a drink a super tiny sip would be ok however it should be minimal.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
