Who has had an EGD in preparation for their sleeve? I am scheduled for mine this coming Thursday. Supposedly it's to check for acid reflux or possible bacteria. I do get heartburn depending on what I eat but it's not a problem for me. Has anyone had an EGD and been surprised of their results? What exactly does it show? I'm hoping nothing unexpected hinders me getting my surgery date!

I had one 5 years ago and was diagnosed with GERD- Gastroesophaegal Reflux Disease. I just had another done on 12/30/2014. This time had a biopsy and the H Pylori test. The H Pylori was negative. That is the bacteria that can cause stomach ulcers. I had some abnormal cells on the biopsy showing some reflux. When I had the first one done I was starting to get a stricture from the acid. So things have improved but I have been on Prilosec for almost a year.

The second endoscopy and the upper GI both showed a hiatal hernia which was a surprise. I am assuming that will get fixed when I sleeve.

I had my test done and the H Pylori was positive for the bacteria. I am allergic to Penicillin so I was put on a cocktail of antibiotics and had to blow in two bags 4 weeks after completing the regiment. That cocktail didn't kill off the bacteria. I just finished a second round of antibiotics a few weeks ago.

Hi, I had an EGD, found out that I have hiatal hernia and two ulcers. The ulcers are in the part of the stomach that is going to be cut off so I don't have to do much about it.

They are also looking for Barrett's Esphogus, which is a pre cancerous condition. If you have it, they will recommend a by-pass as opposed to the sleeve. The by-pass basically "cures" the condition.

Yea pretty much gives the surgeon a complete view of your stomach, they can see hernias, acid erosion, nodules which i had to have removed(very simple) and the bacterias etc. I was scared at first but it was not bad at all. I have one on the 20th to make sure no nodules came back since my surg will prob be march.

Just had mine today! The doctor said everything "looked good" - I always feel weird when they say that right after.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
