still hungry on the post op diet?

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

I was sleeved on 12/30 and I have been on the post op diet of strained Soups and Protein shakes. I still feel hungry all the time. I have been getting plenty of Water. I have two more week before I can add soft foods. Also, my weight loss have been averaging three pounds a day sine surgery. Anyone have some suggestions or advice? Thanks.

@@kabertoson If your losing 3 lbs a day then your doing quit well so no advice for that. As far as hunger it should subside once you get on food with some consistency. Hang in there!

I felt the same way after surgery. I remember just dying to get to dinner time when I could have some Tomato Soup. Then I remember still being hungry when it was gone.

It is mental hunger. You're fixating on food. You aren't used to not eating. You aren't mentally satisfied with the meals you are having. I was and am the same way. The funny thing is when I am working or otherwise focused on something I don't realize I am hungry.

You have to convince yourself that the hunger you feel is mental only and recognize that it is physically impossible for you to feel hunger right now. The mental hunger will always be a battle. I've seen someone else write "This isn't brain surgery" and the longer I am out from surgery the more I realize how accurate that statement was.

Try a Tums or Rolaids - I'm on a PPI but occasionally have some breakthrough acid. Didn't know what it was at first, and thought I was hungry. Now if I'm hungry and don't think I should be (it hasn't been long enough or whatever), I take one of those first and see if it makes the hungry feelings go away before I eat again.

Thank you all. I get the mental hunger issue. That makes sense. I can hardly wait until I can eat real food again.

I thought I was hungry all the time too because I felt a hollow feeling at the top of my stomach then I realized that between all the meds I had to take I forgot to take my prescribed anti-acid pills. After a couple of days the feeling is gone. You should tell your doc about it and if you do have that hollowness then it more than likely is acid.

My surgery was also on 12/30. This has been a breeze and I went back to work on 1/2. So today is 8 days and I haven't weighed since the day of surgery. Should I be weighing everything day? I am on an all liquid diet, no caffeine, under 200 calories, no carbonation, and I drinking Protein the morning and Snacks, broth or creamed Soup in the afternoon and evening. I have not been sick once just maybe a little slow the first couple of days. I am hoping I have lost weight but will not know until my week 2 post op. Except for the bruising and incisions, you would never know I had the surgery. There have been times when I wondered if the Dr. did anything...because this has been so easy.. Has anyone else felt this way?

That's great that you feel so good. I say as long as you follow the program the weight will come off. I can see my body changing and my clothes are starting to drown me. Hang in there and good luck.

I meet with the nutritionist and I found that I am not getting enough protien. I should be at 80-90 grams a day and I have been at 60. Still trying to get the protien in. shakes are not enough.

@4 the better. It sounds like you are doing great! I weigh myself everyday, but that's just me. I am finding I am driving myself a little nuts doing it though. I will stretch it out some. As for discomfort, the first 18 hours after surgery we bad for me. Then it was like a switch flipped and I started feeling great. Make sure you are getting enough protien. I was not, And I was hungry all the time. Once I upped my protien intake I felt better. Good luck on your journey!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
