It's normal for it to take a week or a little longer, but check with your surgeon to see when and if you should take any kind of laxative.

@@galadriel535 Try to lay off the artificial sweeteners (crystal light, sugar free stuff). After 5 days post op I gave up on the artificial sugar and the gas pain and bloat subsided completely.

My sleeve just doesn't respond well to them.

I was started on colace & omeprazole in the hospital. I had my first BM 2 days after I came home. I passed gas like crazy the day after I came home. For some walking helps move the gas along.

My doc said that I needs to have BM no later than 4 days post-op. I took milk of magnesia, mom bought me Philips cherry flavored, then I ended up using a rectal suppository. Also said i should have a BM minimal 3x a week... But I was regular before surgery, once every morning, and I'm back to that schedule again... Definitely talk to your doctor though.

As for the gassy and bloating... They pump air into you to be able to use the various cameras and perform the surgery. That air gets absorbed slowly, so yes that's very normal... I was also told that walking helps with that.

Hey question - why would you have a BM if on Clear Liquids? Or are most people not on clear liquids for a week after surgery? Also do you get a BM if you are just on liquid shakes?

That was the worst part after surgery. After a little bit, it will get better. I took a laxative to help me. Good luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
