Suggestion for Dehydration

Recommended Posts

I am 10 days post op. I am getting my Protein in and able to even do some pureed Soups. Hydration is another story, I am getting moderately dehydrated and clearly not getting enough Water intake. Any suggestions out there? I had a friend recommend Pedialyte Advance Care. Anyone have any experience with that? It has some sugar but also a balance of electrolytes and potassium. It is suppose to help prevent this even though it is usually for babies. I am just not getting enough from the Water I am drinking. This is turning out to be the hardest part to do.

Pedialyte won't hydrate you any more than Water. Just drink more water. Chances are if you are drinking shakes and eating Soups you aren't getting dehydrated.

I couldn't tolerate plain Water or artificial sweeteners for the first 4 months...they hurt my sleeve. I drank pedialyte, diluted sports drinks, diluted 100% fruit juice, milk and Decaf herbal teas. Real sugar in everything (except the tea). Just find something you can tolerate and sip ALL DAY LONG.

If you are feeling dehydrated, you do need to consume fluids that contain electrolytes; it'll correct your dehydration better than plain Water can at this point. Once you are back on track, push Water as much as you can.

@@Elode gave you a very good suggestion and you can also try Powerade Zero. I like the grape and lime flavored ones.

I couldn't drink Water at all for the first two weeks. It just hurt if that makes sense. I poured myself a glass of G2 low cal Gatoraide each morning and sipped on that all day. I also found that room temp or warmer liquids went down better. The main thing is to just keep sip, sip, sipping all day even when you really don't feel like it. Now, at three and half weeks I can do water again... weird!

If you don't mind the taste..coconut Water, minus the pulp is a natural hydrator.

Are you feeling dehydrated or feeling you should be drinking more Water? I rarely drank juices pre-surgery so Water hasn't been a problem for me. if your electrolytes are off coconut water is more natural than say gatorade or pedialyte but not everyone likes the taste. If you aren't a water drinker, diluted juices may be a good option. This early on I would stick to either grape or apple since the acidity in orange juice might be uncomfortable. The point is to get fluids in. Also be aware of your sodium. If you aren't making your Soup from scratch, make sure you buy low sodium. Especially if it's canned Soups.< /p>

I am dehydrated. Urine is too dark and skin is real dry. I have always been a heavy Water drinker, Water was never a problem. I have been recently drinking Propel water, I cant stomach regular water. I cant do sugar free popsicles cause they have Aspertame. Artificial sweeteners never did digest well with me even before surgery. Now I am feeling so nauseated I am finding it hard to even swallow the water. I can drink the Protein shake though. And I am totally freezing all the time. Blood pressure is normal and so is blood sugar. I really think electrolytes are totally off. This is such a pain in the ass. But down 22lbs in 10days. How amazing how much weight you can lose when you can only suck air and liquid food.

The kidneys are intolerable of prolonged dehydration. Push fluids with electrolytes any way that you can manage it. Aside from sleeve surgery, nausea is a sign of dehydration as well. Your blood pressure may be normal, but is your pulse? If this persists and you can't correct the dehydration on your own, it would be best to seek medical care. Good luck and I hope you are feeling better soon.

@@Shannon Piper I'm 13 days post op and I have been drinking diluted Gatorade since about 3 days post op. My sleeve does respond well to artificial sweeteners and I needed more than Water (which is my primary) to stay feeling hydrated. I don't do g2 because of the artificial, I just do plain Gatorade (2/3) with water (1/3).

@bittersweet No I am not shivering and I don't have a fever. I am calling this carb death . I'm not sure if that's an accurate assumption. Before surgery I was eating normal food and burning that as fuel and not losing much weight if any. After surgery I am eating nothing but Protein shakes and burning the fat that has been stored , so I can only guess this is what's happening. I went to the ER and all my blood work was normal. Electrolytes, kidneys all good. Potassium good. But doctor thought I might be slightly dry so he gave me 2 liters of Fluid to load me up and IV Zofran for nausea. I feel better. I just got to find the right balance of what kind of Fluid to drink and hope I force it down better each day. The coldness crap though really sucks.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
