Final pre-surg consult coming up - trying to come up with questions

Recommended Posts

Finally have my date (January 19) and am seeing my surgeon on tuesday to go over consents and take care of last minute questions.

Obvious ones:

when can I go back to work (I work nights as an RN, am figuring I'll be out for a month due to weight restrictions)

when can I travel again (parents are 300 miles away and worried sick about me doing this, want me to come down to see them if the surgeon will clear me for it).

Post-op nausea management (I really really hate throwing up)

"when to call 911"

Not so obvious ones:

Migraine management post-op (have occassional Migraines and currently I take imitrex and naproxen for them - naproxen is obviously out, worried that imitrex would be a problem too).

Any other suggestions? Am excited and terrified at the same time, and I figure that's only going to get worse between now and the 19th.

I'm not really worried about the "when can I eat ______ again" - if there's one thing I've gleaned from this message board is that everyone is different.

What is pain management like afterwards?

Will I wake up with a binder on my stomach?

What about Constipation issues afterwards?

How is nausea during and after surgery handled?

What is the typical length of stay?

Can I have printouts of the post op diet and subsequent stages so I can go shopping now?

Hope this helps :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
