painful burping (not from surgical site)

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am almost 3 weeks out and have had a rough go. Was in the hospital yesterday. Had to get IV fluids and a work up. They really didn't find much except dehydration and so me swelling in my esophagus. Past days prior I had this pressure pain in my chest and esophagus which has made it hard to drink fluids. Today I have nausea and cant get much fluids down (20 oz of Gatorade). Today is different though, when I burp (often) I get pain/ache in my esophagus, chest, and stomach area. Almost like when you over inflate something as burping expands these areas. When not burping I still have tightness in chest and ache but much more sharp when I burp. Anyone experience this before? Any ideas? Most sips cause more chest pain to like someone is sitting on my chest. Again, I interpret it as when the esophagus, chest, and stomach expands. Im just miserable and I got no answers from ER. I am very weak due tolack of fluids and nutrients I imagine. I just want to feel well for 1 day. thanks all and wishes for a Happy Healthy Thanksgiving for Everyone

And every tiny sip i take I have to have these painful burps. Then some nausea. My perception is as if some place is too narrow, restricting proper flow

It's like I need to burp each sip to allow it to pass a certain point. I wish they would have done an EGD in the hospital yesterday. The surgeon kind of mentioned that possibility when I had him paged Sunday but they never did it yesterday. Just blood work and a cat scan of esophogus and chest. They didn't even look at the stomach area

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
