Took me over an hour to eat an ounce of tuna fish

Recommended Posts

So, today I got the go ahead for Phase 3 - soft and pureed foods. I made a small can of tuna (2 ounces) with a tiny bit of mayo. I sat down at my computer to continue working and noticed that it took me well over an hour to eat an ounce of tuna.

I myself need to work on eating slower since I am a very fast eater but I think I took this one a little too far. I read that eating TOO slow isn't good either. You never stop and get that "full" feeling because of the slowness and the food getting the chance to move through the sleeve while you're nursing your food for an hour.

I did stop at 1 oz and put the rest in the fridge for tomorrow. Nice thing is, I'm not hungry. 1 oz of tuna with a tiny bit of mayo filled me right up.

I will see how I do at dinner. I think I'm going to set a timer for myself.

I think when I was starting out the surgeon's office said no longer than a half an hour because then it kind of turns into grazing. Good luck!

Good idea with the timer.

Eating slowly was something I had to come to grips with. Only threw up once though.

The longer I practiced--the better I got at it.

As with any habit, it takes time to develop it.

So happy you progressed to the pureed stage. I remember how happy I was to be able to eat real food :) .

Blessings,

Kathleen

I have used the Eat Slower app on my phone. You can change the time intervals to your liking. It really helps me! (I have a tendency to eat waaay too fast)

Also, don't do anything else but EAT...no computer, especially at this stage. It's hard, we are overlappers ... too much to do and no time to do it.

But you need to concentrate on your food right now.

Good luck...this is just the beginning, so don't over do!

I cannot even fathom taking that long to eat an oz. of tuna. Sometimes it's still just unreal to me that this is all about to happen in my own life!

@@JenWith Lol! It is slow going at first! It will get better. If I catch myself eating longer than 30 mins I stop. I'm 3 weeks out and I can eat at a decent speed but just not much...maybe 2oz and I'm good! I still drink my Protein Drinks, I'm pretty sure that's the only reason why I'm not dragging butt! I have good energy and I take all my vitamins!

Thanks all! I did much better at dinner. 25 minutes. Small plate too. And no beverage even though I really wanted some Water. I think I am getting it.

Taking my time and not drinking before, during, and after have been my biggest issues. At 5 weeks out, I'm getting better, but I still need to work on it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
