Step 2 - Consultation with Surgeon - done!

Recommended Posts

I just got back from my first visit/consultation with the surgeon. Soooooooo much information, but I'm more relieved after each step of this process is done.

Step 1 - meet with PCP and get referral

Step 2 - consultation with bariatric surgeon

I can't wait until that list of completed steps gets longer.

For anyone else just getting started, here is what my first visit was like.

Filled out paperwork (does it ever freaking end?!) with medical history, symptoms, diseases, etc. Then the nurse took my BP (which was high, since I was nervous for some reason. It's usually not high at all.) Then an associate member of the bariatric staff came in with a deeper dive into the questions I filled out in the beginning. Questions about past attempts at formal diets, depression, eating habits, activity levels. Then the surgeon came in. What a nice guy he was. Never once made me feel rushed as some docs do, and was adorable to boot. LOL. He said for my weight and age (263 and 39 yrs old) and lack of any comorbidities, he thinks I chose the right type of weight loss surgery (VSG.) That was comforting to hear.

My practice has a $600 out of pocket, non-refundable fee for things that insurance doesn't cover - which is psych, dietitian, and support groups. The nice thing is that covers the dietitian and support groups for life. The bariatric staff handles everything else, including interacting with the insurance company for me, from start to finish. That, too, was a relief. They will tell me exactly what they need, and I get it, and they do all the interfacing.

Next steps: they call and verify this is a procedure my plan covers (which I already know it does) and then they mail me a packet which includes a list of appointment dates/times that they will have made for me for all of my tests. I'm loving the fact that they make all those appointments for me!!

So this train has officially left the station. Chooo choooo! On my way, now.

It's so exciting, isn't it? I have all of my appointments tomorrow. NUT, psych, and Fit eval. Then the real countdown starts! Surgery in 30 days!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
