9 days post op and STARVING, why?

Recommended Posts

So today I actually met my fluids goals and even over on Protein goals . So I took in the most fluids and most protein since surgery, but since like 6 pm.tonight in have had bad hunger feelings. I had some more protein rich broth, then hungry again, then Protein Shake, then hungry again. So bad right now, had some Jello, still won't go away. What's the deal? Only purpose of this surgery is to be able to eat a reduced amount of calories and not be hungry let alone a starving feeling. All I want to do is eat something right now.and of course can't. Up until this evening I hadn't been hungry since before surgery even on days I had less . Any ideas to why?

Are you diabetic? If so, what's your blood sugar? Any different medications? Is it possible that this is a stress thing? A heartburn thing? What does 'hungry' feel like?

I had similar issues. I was not diabetic, but used my husbands meter and found out my blood sugars were high 70's low 80's..too low for me. I was able to have milk, and once i started that with its little bit of carbs, I felt much better. I also red that once some of the swelling goes down, it gets better. Mine was genuine hunger, not "head hunger" and it is MUCH better 4 weeks out. Hang in!

The hunger really does go sway. I was hungry 3 day's after surgery to nearly a week. I drank Water and milk to hold back the feeling of being hungry. Feeling hungry does go

away, it 's just your body getting use

to fewer calories. Try making your own smoothie's which will help you fell fuller.

Are you on a PPI (acid reducer) such as omeprazole or Protonix? If not, you may need one. Or if you are, you may need a different one or a higher dose. Stomach acid often feels like hunger, especially if you are feeling "hungry" within a short time after eating.

I am off. Omeprazole but haven't taken it in a couple days. That can make you feel hungry? Still hungry this morning. Also for other responses, I had the most Protein, calories, and liquids of any day since surgery and the Protein Shakes were made with milk.

Yep. Omeprazole is a long term acid suppresser - it doesn't work immediately. I reiterate my recommendation for Zantac, given the current knowledge. See if that cuts your hunger within an hour or so... if it does, get back on your Prilosec!

My stomach felt like it was gnawing at itself for a little while after surgery, even while I was taking omeprazole. It wasn't hunger though, it was acid. It was really prevalent for the first 4 months for me. It felt very similar to what I thought hunger felt like though, for sure. Now I have no problems and still don't actually get hungry.

YES!!! I went through the same thing. Like to the point of insanity. I had a hard time with Protein Drinks bc I wasn't allowed milk by my surgeon- Water was gross with it-.. and I was on the acid reducer as well. It does pass, I promise. As soon as you get to the step to eat eggs, canned chicken etc..you will be full quickly. Best of luck & hang in there :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
