I had it a week after my surgery and haven't stopped, no problem!

I asked my Dr. about caffeine...she says it is Ok, just don't put sugar and cream in it...definately check with your doctor, but I was stressing about it, and she said I should definately drink Decaf presurgery, as the nurses in the hosp will only serve decaf at the hosp. But when it is time to start drinking warm...regular coffee is ok. Again, check with your doctor, as there is a debate as to whether caffein or decaf...some docs feel the research shows it can contribute to ulcers...

I started regular (non herbal) tea at about 5 weeks out.

I felt better waiting and just stuck to non caffiene teas until then, give the stomach some time to heal. I never asked my doc either way because I know there are lots of different views about it.

I'm 9 weeks out now and still haven't gone back to coffee yet. Not sure when/if I will.

Keep in mind that caffeine is known to spark hunger.

I think "woo woo" has the right idea...wait til the healing is complete! And, the comment about caffeine sparking hunger...hunger, what hunger? :P

@@GoAllTheWeigh LOL true, but one day when the honeymoon phase is over and you're downing that caffeine a couple times a day you may wonder why the hunger is back full force. Take a stroll through the veterans board... it happens ;)

Oh, trust me, BobbysWife, I don't purport to know a thing here...I only posted about the caffeine as it will be an issue for me! I was joking when I said "what hunger"... I look on here for everything and every answer...trust me!

Oh dear, I am 8 days out. Feeling great. Water (which I drank tons of before VSG), makes me nauseous and as soon as I realized the problem I switched to herbal teas. I had not been told about not drinking hot liquids. Of course I assumed that since they served me hot broth in the hospital it would be ok. I mentioned the tea to my surgeon yesterday and he did not say anything. Now I am worried.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
