Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or even longer. But don't worry – after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. And, the inches continue to come off even while the scale isn't budging. If you're interested, here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again like crazy!

(Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)

@Lateese92 @@AlanaRN I'm about 6 weeks out as well and as soon as I started 'real' food I stalled...bad. The scale is beginning to move a little now but I was totally stumped (and still feel a bit confused). The way it was explained to me is that the body has an amazing ability to adapt. So now that it's gotten used to so few calories we have a lower threshold of what we can eat and not stall or gain. So while I may not eat ever 1/4 of what I used to, just simply eating more carbs than we should can stall you because of the increase in calories. I'm not sayign that's what's happening with you but for me it made perfect sense. I wasn't eating horribly at all but there were definitely some times when I either ate too much or ate something I probably shouldnt' have. And the opposite holds true to...if you don't get enough carbs your body will hold onto what you do eat to avoid you starving it. For me I've had to go back to being VERY careful to get all my Fluid and Protein and cut out any carbs that don't come from veggies. The only other carb I'm allowing myself is sweet potato and then only once a week. It's hard and not fun for someone who spent the bulk of her life addicted to food but I'd hate to have gone to all the trouble of the surgery only to sabotage myself.

The other thing I really have to get serious about is exercise. I walk occasionally but not nearly as much as I should. i work with a girl who is a personal trainer and she's helping me come up with a plan to help me get my body together. And interstingly enough it's mostly strength/weight training and limited cardio (since our bodies are kind of fat burnign machines for the next few months at least). I'm hoping it works.

I'm consistently amazed at how complex this whole process is and sometimes I wish I'd taken more time to wrap my brain around it before I started. But at the end of the day I'm pleased. I haven't seen anything in the 220's in many many years so I have to sometimes cut myself a break and realize that progress is progress and all of it is more than I'd have had if I hadn't had the surgery. At least this year I don't have to worry about gorging myself during the holidays and starting the year 10 pounds heavier

Good luck to you both! Let us know what kicks you out of the plateau!

Thanks all. Your support means a lot. I'm now under 250 for the first time in over 12 years. That's something in itself!

@@PartOfMyCharm - That's it in a nutshell. The body is tricky! It learns to adjust and adapt. That's why I can't be married to the scale. The scale doesn't tell me when I have increased range of motion or my knees no longer ache because my flexibility has improved. As long as I don't regain, I'm good. I'm going to always look for non-scale victories.

I'm at week 2 and this week I have not lost one pound. ....I'm eating under 30 carbs abt 600 cal. HELPPPP

Patience. It's only your second week. Your body is still adjusting. Just keep following your food plan and drinking your Water. If your doctor has cleared you exercise. If not, get out and take a walk. It will happen.

Thanks! The scary thing is that on every diet I have done I have always plateaued at 35 lbs lost and never been able to go further. I'm afraid that's what is going to happen.

The mind is a very powerful thing. Your body will follow. Change your perspective and believe in yourself. You're doing GREAT.

Hi ladies, I am also 6-7 weeks out. I lost a pound this week. I have followed my diet to a "T". I am also a RN, and I work in the OR. I went back after 9 days. It seems we just need to persevere and press on. Good luck.

Melanie

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
