Question: Starting on the road

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I've got an appointment to start the conversation with a bariatric doctor and am very hopeful. I have always been an active person but have yo yoed on my loss got down 85 lbs due to running and frequent exercise and eating right, this year I injured my back (herniated discs) and gained a lot of weight due to feeling so sorry for myself for not being able to do much but sit around. I've got my BMI at 38.5 and I can't do much for cardio cause my back is weak. Doctors tell me if I loose weight my back will heal itself. I'm wondering if this is going to be a great option for me to jump start my way to a long term goal. Thoughts? I'm hoping I get approved by insurance. Thanks so much for the help

I couldn't walk a block to church or stand in one place for more than a few minutes without horrible back pain at 302 pounds. At 198 I have zero back pain. I don't even take my Tylenol most days now. I was living on prescription NSAIDS for years. Good luck.

I broke L4 and L5 30 years ago and have always had lingering lower back pain. I also had 2 vertebrae fused in my neck 6 years ago. But my worst pain preop was in my feet and ankles. I'm on my feet all day and was in constant pain all day. Lived on ibuprofen and tramadol. Other than one day this summer when I took a sublingual ketorolac for my back, I haven't had to take any NSAIDS or pain Meds since surgery. Not to say your back will miraculously heal itself, but for me, my weight loss has resolved all pain.

Just starting the process to go for a Lap Band. I weigh 330 and have a BMI of 45. December 18 I'll see the psych Dr then off to the nutrition person then to the surgeon. The Ins has pre proved operation . I'm all excised to get this done. I've talked about this for 4 years. I'm 63 and I want to live longer.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
