Trying to decide...

Recommended Posts

I am also a "gastric sleeve stalker" trying to figure out if it's right for me. I am 5'4" and weigh 244 right now. I have struggled with my weight my whole life and I've lost a million pounds and tried about every diet. I talked to my primary physician about it last week and he said he would be supportive but he wanted me to know that only about 2/3 are successful with keeping it off. Does anyone have any information about the success rate?

The success rate for keeping it off without surgery is only about 5%.

I'm taking my chances with the sleeve! Actually, I'm not taking any chances. I'm following my doctor's food recommendations, and I'm investing in my health with a gym membership and a personal trainer.

mmmm I think it will have to do with 1) the construction of your sleeve ( not all sleeves are done the same) 2) your compliance to the eating program and 3) exercise.

There are overall numbers for long term weight loss with the sleeve, they are averages, you can decide where you want to be in those averages. The surgery is only part of the equation we are the other part. I am only one month out of surgery and I believe the key will be if you are ready to commit LONG TERM. We need to commit to permanent life changes with the help of the surgery of course.

For me, doing it on my own was just not an option, I had failed so many times I needed to do something with better success rates.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
