Can I take ibuprofen?

Recommended Posts

I'm freaking out a little. I don't remember my NUT or doctor telling me I can't have ibuprofen anymore. I just read it here. I took it 4 days last week because I had a horrible headache that wouldn't go away. Have I ruined something? My surgery date was Oct. 7, 2014. :-/

You need to call your surgeon's office and see what they say (and let them know that you took it and how much). As a general rule, ibuprofen is not allowed after bariatric surgery.

Ibuprofen irritates the stomach and can cause ulcers. Probably best to switch to Tylenol. Would hate to get an ulcer and have a leak down the road.

NO Ibuprofen, NO Aleve. Call your DR for recommendation. They will probably suggest Tylenol.

My surgeon said 6 weeks post-op on ibuprofen and naproxen sodium (Aleve). I would check, of course, but I do plan on taking them when needed later (I just had surgery Thursday.) because they simply work far better for me.

I was not told to not take ibuprofen. I take it after food every now and than. I been having killer headaches. I now use Fiocet. I suffer from Migraines. No migraines so far.

It's important that you let your surgeon know because ibuprofen has blood thinning properties and this could increase your risk of complications during surgery. They will probably be giving you a blood thinner just before your surgery which could make it even worse.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
