Had port revision surgery, pain at port site

Recommended Posts

I had an issue, which I've written about here, that the tubing of my port was sticking out of my stomach in an extreme fashion, so I had to have an additional procedure done to fix that.

After the second procedure, which was 16 days ago, I started having very strong pain at the port site, which I didn't have after my initial lap band surgery.

It's not a steady constant pain, but it hurts badly when I touch it or something bumps into it, lay in bed on my stomach or my right side, and when I make certain movements like bending etc.

The pain is very strong and stinging, and it's unlike anything I've experienced after my first surgery.

I can only sleep on my left side, otherwise the pain is unbearable.

It hasn't gotten any better in the last two weeks, it's been the same level pain since the procedure.

I saw my surgeon today, and he said that the pain isn't something out of the ordinary, and since he has had to reposition the port and had to resurture the port to the abdominal wall, and he claims he made it tighter this time so the tubing wouldn't come out of place again, he claims that as far as the port site is concerned, it's as if I've had lap band surgery all over again and the pain is normal.

But I'm very skeptical of him, and I have had too many issues already since surgery.

So my question is, if it's normal to experience sharp pains at the port site for a prolonged period of time after surgery? And is it normal to go a few weeks without any reduction in said pain?

do you have a fever? even a low grade one. it could be a infection. I would call your doctor, I think something with this much pain should be looked at

No I don't have fever, and as mentioned in my post, I was at my doctors yesterday, and he flatly ruled out an infection.

And I happen to agree with him on this, because it doesn't look infected, and the pain is more of a localized touch pain, than the general pain I felt when I had infections.

This Friday I will be 3 weeks post op, and my port site is still sore. Yesterday I bumped it while cleaning my kitchen counters and I literally stood there holding my breath with tears running down my face. I still can't lay on tummy and it still hurts if I bend over. Sometimes I get so frustrated with the pain, it makes me double guess even putting myself thru this. I have absolutely no restriction. I honestly even wonder if he put the lapband in sometimes lol. I know this banister hell ect, I know I need to wait for fills, but this is truly a very irritating time.

I'm sorry you're having this pain. Each day is supposed to be a little better than the last. Unfortunately the bumping of the port is something that can just take the wind out of you. In my experience this sensitivity was gone after a couple of months. I was able to sleep on my stomach shortly after surgery but it wasn't totally comfortable for many weeks. Hang in there. It does get better. Once your weight starts coming off these days will seem like a faint memory.

I'm about to have port revision surgery because the cord has wrapped around my diaphragm and is hitting the vegus nerve. It sends shooting pains to my left shoulder. Apparently since I have lost all my weight my port sits higher to my diaphragm. I remember my port hurting really bad after surgery 2 years ago.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
