starting my pre-op diet 1 week early

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon! I am scheduled to start my pre-op diet on 10/28/14 per my surgeon's office for my VSG scheduled on 11/11. I have been really contemplating starting my pre-op diet a week early for several reasons. First, my liver enzymes have been steadily increasing for the last 3 years and my pcp said I have a fatty liver which we all know is a risky condition with laparoscopic surgery. I do not want any chance of my surgery being aborted. I have had to make a lot of plans and organize a lot of our life to make this surgery happen while keeping my household operating while I am down. I have also met all of my out of pocket obligations with my insurance for the year. The holiday season will be upon us shortly along with a planned family vacation at the end of January. Surgery has to happen now or it will be a while before I can get everything into position again to make surgery possible at a later date.

So with all of that, I am opting to start my pre-op diet a week early and do a 3 week diet instead of a 2 week diet. My surgeon's office is aware I am doing this and they are fine with it. They are baffled that someone would voluntarily submit themselves to another week of this diet when it wasn't required, but they understand why I am making this decision. Besides, an extra week of losing weight before surgery is less weight I will have to lose after surgery. Every ounce matters and every ounce lost will make surgery and recovery that bit easier. I am now trying to find a form of some type to keep track of my weight and body measurements on paper. I am also making a daily check sheet to make sure I follow my diet and get everything in that I should.

So tonight I am enjoying pizza for dinner with diet coke to drink followed by a glass of wine and a caramel sundae for dessert. Tomorrow my new life and the journey to a better me begins! It is exciting and terrifying at the same time. Let's get this show on the road!

I started early, though by just a few days. I was ready to get the show on the road and I was SO TIRED OF EATING and deciding what to eat and when...........I actually enjoyed the liquid diet. Easy peasy.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
