Is this normal? Four days days post-op...

Recommended Posts

And I have not pooped since before my surgery. I'm still on clear liquid diet so I am urinating just fine, but it kind of freaks me out that nothing is coming out the other end. (Sorry, potty talk :- ) Has anyone else noticed this? Is it normal to not have a stool movement for such a long time? Thanks!

:) It will happen. Taking in liquids is a little slower then taking in solids. Wait a couple more days and then ask for a softener. It should help....

When you think about it you are on a liquids only diet at the moment so liquids go in and urine comes out - so far so good. You are not putting anything into your body that needs to come out via the bowel yet - so no BM. When you move on to Soups, yogurts etc there's more substance, but only in very small quantities so it will take a while for enough 'waste' to build up to require a BM. Also don't forget that most of the healthy food you are ingesting is absorbed and used by the body so there's little waste anyway.

Don't worry - it will happen. Keep well hydrated though. I had my first BM 4 days post op but still not going every day. It doesn't worry me because there's not much in there!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
