Post-op Day 5: No voice

Recommended Posts

Today I went back to work and I'm feeling pretty good aside from being winded from going up stairs. I'm an English teacher and I just realized after my first class that I don't have much of a voice :( post op my throat hurt for two days but the pain went away. I live alone so I haven't talked to anyone in days. Did anyone else experience issues with their voice? If so how long did it take for things to get back to normal?

No but it kinda makes sense. They stuck a tube down your throat for anesthesia and maybe bruised some of your vocal cords or whatnot. Be kind to your voice for a few days. Maybe check with your surgeon too.

Very common from the ET Tube...they are supposed to recommend to you throat lozenges/spray before surgery, to be taken immediately afterwards.

I'm sure you are now with no voice.....however 5 days later you should call your Dr.'s office. can be your PCP.

I had 'weak voice' issues for months....no real distress but 'loud voice' was broken and crackly.

I think my vocal cords were traumatized.....but now 10 years later I can NOT sing just as poorly as I EVER could not-sing....

I'd encourage you to make the issue known to your provider ASAP.

Yes I lost my voice but only for two and a half days after. I kept saying I sounded like Marge Simpson. ;) I'm sure it didn't make it easier when you speak for a living. Best of luck to you.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
