Looking to get VSG in Mexico

Recommended Posts

Hi, this is my first post:) My employer is a health insurance company that started covering vsg for employees only. Upon completion of a 6 month nutrition program participants can get the surgery covered. I finally decided to join the program and to my surprise there is a waiting list of over 150 people now. The program will only allow 10 people to join per month so i could potentially be waiting a year or longer to even start the program. Locally vsg would cost me $15K selfpay. My husbands insurance is Anthem BCBS (of which i am not covered). Tomorrow i will call and see if bariatric is covered. Open enrollment is soon so if so i will get coverage depending on if i have a waiting period after new enrollment. My last option is Mexico. Can anyone weighin on their experience with Belite, Alighterme, etc. Thx!

I had surgery with Dr. Alejandro Lopez in Puerto Vallarta (Specialized Bariatrics) on August 13th. He and his team were wonderful, the hospital was maybe the cleanest building I've ever seen. The nurses were super attentive. The hotel was beautiful. The aftercare was great. The past 3 1/2 weeks have gone pretty much "text book" for me. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Lopez.

I had my surgery with Dr. Ariel Ortiz and Dr. Martinez at Obesity Control Center. I can't say enough good things about them....credentials, experience and complication rates are outstanding, surgery is at their private hospital, and you get personal attention including great post op communication from their followup doctors. You book and deal directly with them, not a third party Medical Tourism company. Check out the thread "Dr. Ariel Ortiz and Obesity Control Center" on the self pay/Mexico surgery forum. It's very long, but has detailed posts from dozens of OCC patients. Or feel free to PM me if you'd like more info.

Good luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
