I read somewhere that RNY patients have to be careful about drinking alcohol particularly in the first year. Apparently we are at high risk for developing a replacement addiction from food to alcohol or drugs. I think it is a good thing to avoid while we work out out emotional reasons for over eating. Not to mention alcohol is high converted sugar. ????

Alcohol can also cause ulcerations to the anastomoses ...... Where we have been rerouted.

In my program we were told to avoid gum for two main reasons. 1 - it causes us to swallow added air, which adds gas to our pouch and adds risk to stretching it (same reason we have to avoid carbonation and using straws). 2 - It actually excites the enzymes in our stomach that are responsible for hunger and emulates one particular one (gremlin? gretlin? something like that).

I used to be an avid gum chewer (always sugar free), but have stuck with the recommendation post-surgery.

As for other absolute no-nos, it is all about sugar, fat and carbs. Anything high in any of those items will be counter-productive to our journeys and while we may or may not "tolerate" them, I avoid them as much as possible as I don't want to start back down the slippery slope of my pre-surgery days.

THIS!! Someone very close to me had gastric bypass 8-10 years ago and when things got rough she started to drink (she was not a drinker before) and she became a FULL fledged alcoholic as it replaced her eating instead. So please please everyone be careful. She almost lost everything

I was not told I had to stay off carbonation forever. I don't really care because I never was much of a soda drinker. The Doctor and Nutritionist said it is a myth that it wil stretch the pouch, but it can cause gas and make you very uncomfortable. As you get further out it maybe tolerated.

Once on regular food I was told I can eat anything that I could tolerate but that didn't mean I should. My Doc is all about Protein first, veggies second and you probably won't have room for starches. Further out I hear a lot of people say they eat popcorn. Good Luck!

I am still having issues with the types of food to eat. I had my RNY last year on May 14. I've lost 130 pounds but it keeps fluctuating and making me feel like I'm losing the battle

What is the word on chewing gum? My sister had the sleeve, and a good friend had lap

Band. They are forbidden to chew gum. How about those of us getting RNY?

I chew gum with no issues...just very careful not to swallow it!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
