Energy after surgery.

Recommended Posts

My concern is I have very active job and family life. And now I have been using energy drinks and coffee to help give me boosts. But what can I do after surgery? If I'm cutting my food intake down and I'm gonna be restricted to Water and broth and mushy foods for a few weeks what can I do to maintain high level of energy

That's kinda the beauty of weight loss. The more you lose the more energy you get back. Avoid the coffee and drinks and kick-start things at the gym. You'll thank yourself for it........ ;)

I had the same worries. Fortunately, the body is smart enough to find its energy equilibrium and efficient to figure out how to maximize energy from the new paradigm. It works itself out.

You will need to set your "active life" on hold and give your body a few weeks to heal. If you are not careful you will damage yourself and really have to put things on hold for a much longer time. Three to five weeks is really a very short period of time. Some folks claim to be raring to go right out of the gate but then I have not heard how that works out in the long run for them.

I took a leave of absence for 6 weeks but at four weeks I felt ready to go back to work where I do a lot of lifting, loading and unloading at a very fast pace. Then the Constipation really hit me sevral times and now I'm glad I did not go back to work at 4 weeks. But then again, I am almost 66 so, age may be a factor.

wise words above. I've lost 15lb pre-op and I can already notice a difference in energy. take it slow. you will recover, then you can grab the bull by the horns!

You just have to learn to adapt and be aware of your limitations at first. I am now 6 months out (which flew by) and no longer am having any energy level issues. Of course the almost 100lbs. lost is the key!!!

James,

I struggled with energy issues the first week to 10 days feeling light headed and feeling like I was going to black out when I stood up. It turned out it had nothing to do with my reduced caloric intake but instead had to do with a drop in my blood pressure after surgery. My doctor took me off my blood pressure medication and everything has been fine since then.

I had the VSG surgery on July 31st and had lost 40 lbs pre-op. My doctor had me take a daily dose of Vitamin B12 (sublingual)(over the counter) that would help with energy levels. As others have mentioned it's amazing how quickly the body adapts especially when you have detoxed from all the unhealthy eating habits developed over a life time. I'm eating soft foods now and will move to solids in about 10 days but my enery levels have never been better now than they have been over the last 20 years. I'm guessing I'm consuming somewhere now between 600-700 calories daily. I've lost an additional 33 lbs since surgery and the boost in enery in not having to carry an extra 73 lbs with every step I take has been tremendous. I didn't mentioned this but I'm also 60 years old and now feel better and younger than when I was 40.

This is the best thing I've ever done in my life. I wish I could have done this 20 years ago but the advances that have been made in bariatric surgery didn't exist then. I'm just happy I did it. Don't worry about the energy. Just do it and you'll be rewarded in a relatively short period of time. Within two weeks of surgery I was off my blood pressure medication for good and also did not need my CPAP machine any more. My sleep is much better now than it has been. I don't snore and I feel energergized when I wake up. The surgery has been life changing for me as I'm sure it will be for you.

Best of luck with your surgery.

Dallas

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
