Newbie having a rough day

Recommended Posts

hello guys and gals! I have been lurking here everyday for the past few weeks. I haven't said much because I have pretty much found answers to all my questions somewhere here in the forum. Any way, so I am in the process of being banded through TR. Actually my egd is scheduled for tomorrow. I haven't told many people because I'm sure you all know how it is with negative comments.....'your not big enough to do this to yourself', 'you just need to exercise more', etc. *sigh*. It's getting to be pretty depressing. I have only told a few people that need to know (parents, close family) and those that would be able to help accompany me to doctors appts. I may be sensitive, but it feels like negative feedback especially when you are not asking for their approval but rather for their support. Further, it's seems like no one is REALLY supportive. For example, I had a friend that was supposed to accompany me to the egd tomorrow and now she backs out for what I feel to be a bull**** reason.

I am just feeling discouraged today and I hope that you all can share some kind words. Thank you!!! :)

Ok I am going to put it out there who are you doing or why are you even thinking of getting wls take that in to consideration , ,heck I tell everybody now , why because I don't care what people think it was not any one's decision but mine and my family & friends that were with me before me being banded are still there , I for one have a healthier, movable life and I am not sluggish and tired all the time like I was , good luck on your journey .

Lovelynne,

I also went thru TR in Austin. They did the EGD and band just last week. I feel great. Had my post op appt today. Do this for yourself. Don't worry about the opinions of others. I told a few people. Most were supportive, esp. my hubby. But I also heard these comments from other people: exercise more, eat less, and why go thru surgery w/only 50-60 lb's overweight. Well, I choose to do it for my health. And I'm so glad that I did. Keep your head up, ignore the negative comments, and enjoy the weight loss journey.

Here's wishing you success! :)

Keep in mind that if you've done your homework and research, and your Dr, thinks its a good idea, then other peoples opinions just dont matter much. You are doing this for YOU, NOT them !!!! Congrats to you for getting healthy and strong ! Thats whats important, not others uninformed opinions. You go girl !

Hi there, the lead-up to surgery can be such a grind -- all the appointments, the whirring anxiety and excitement, pre-op diet if you have one can bring a lot of stuff up to the surface, etc. Take extra good care of yourself and know that in choosing to put yourself first there may be a little initial resistance or lack of understanding about how big this is, giving yourself this gift. People may not really get it but you will be soaring. Good luck with all; it's so worth it!

When I went I my primary care dr to get the letter to clear me for surgery her nurse came in to take my BP etc. when she asked why I was there I told her to get clearance for WLS. I am a little over 300lbs and 5'7" so I'm no "on the border" person. I am morbidly obese. She said to me "oh have you tried weight watchers?"

No lady I never heard of that program!!! I just sweetly smiled and said yes but I was not successful long term with it. So I think it was good practice for when I tell people.

I am a manager at work so it's unlikely I will tell many people. I have told only my husband and a friend at work who is also overweight and is uncomfortable about me talking about it so I generally don't. My husband is ok about it but has done nothing to research it etc. I wouldn't call him supportive in the sense that he's figuring out what will change etc. However any big change in my life has been done by me mostly alone with little support so this will be another one. In the end it's all about your change anyway whether people support you or not.

@@briefs199 -- Have you tried Weight Watchers? OMG, that is just the laughing out loud I need to get me off of this thing and into my office to get some work done. Thank you. It's pouring rain and I needed some motivation -- laughter usually does it for me!

I have been very selective about the people I have told about my surgery. The first gal I did tell I thought I knew fairly well and so I went ahead and told her. Her response? "Isn't that a lot of money to pay just to lose 70 or 80 pounds? Just try a little harder with diet and exercise". So that kind of told me right then and there that I may get that from other people. I told her if I just had ten dollars from all of the weight loss programs I have paid for the past 25-30 years I could take our family on a world cruise!! We all have to make that decision for ourselves. Fortunately since then I have told a few family members and they have been so supportive. It's a very personal decision. Good luck to you:). I was banded on July 22nd:)

End zone...hi. I am doing really great. Thank you. Was three weeks post op yesterday and am on solid foods. Just taking it one day at a time. Hardest thing for me is to remember not to drink while eating. It's a life long habit. Argh:(. I look forward to my first fill in the 27;)!!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
