How Many Miles Can You Do?

I was wondering how many miles you exercise daily?

Is it walking/running/jogging outside or inside on a treadmill? Do you use a bike?

When you exercise on a treadmil or bike, Which do you focus on more? the time/carlories/miles ?

I was told to go slow at first, Don't try to push for A LOT right off the bat. Because If I get to a standstill, I might try to kill myself to go that extra mile or two.

I do mine by time. Mainly because of going to Curves.. which I can't do until I check with the nurse on the 8th. But I try to walk outside for at least 30 minutes. Today I put grandson Ethan in the stroller and we did 45 minutes... he had a toy cell phone that drove me nuts, but it kept me walking!! When I can't get outside I do the walking tapes.. I do the power walking one that is a mile in 20 minutes.

I started with 1/2 mile at 35 minutes. I had built up to 4 miles a day at 1 hour 10 or 15 minutes.Now that I am goal I have been able to cut back to around 2 miles a day.

Time is really what matters - exercise aerobically for say 45 minutes. The actual distance you do increases with your fitness.

But I must admit to focussing on distance. That's how I challenge myself. And I'm hard on myself so its nearly always 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

On the treadmill I have to play games with myself becuase I like to cover at least 6kms a day (almost 4 miles) preferably 10kms (6 and a bit miles), so I might run 3kms and then do a 4km program otherwise I just get insanely bored.

Outside I have my routes that I run regularly all measured out.

I started running again after a break a couple of months ago, and I am running 5km (just over 3 miles I think) in 35 minutes, and walking for about 20mins at 6km/h on the treadmill, per day.

I then go out with DH 4 times a week, getting him started on the Cool Running Couch to 5k program, and on his off days with the C25K, we walk about 3 or 4k. So

So I walk / run / drag DH jogging for about 2 hours a day at this stage. Usually covering somewhere around 8 or 9 Km.

I've been doing 3 miles on the bike, I feel I can do more.. But I don't want to push it just yet. I can really feel it in the back of my legs when I am done. The first time I did the bike.... My legs felt like noodles when I got off it, lol.

Plus walking outside for 20 minutes.

** And nothing to do with miles, but I'm lifting 10lb weights and using a thigh squeezer thing for a count of 35 with holding it for 3 seconds each squeeze.

I can't run at all, never could, but on the bike or elliptical I can actually get somewhere. Walking is something I can do anywhere so when I'm at the gym I stick to the cool machines. :)

Yesterday I did about 5 miles on the bike (20 minutes) and almost 3 miles on the elliptical (30 minutes). Whew!

This is by no means daily, though; if I'm lucky it's 3 times a week.

I'm a big gal so I go to the gym 3 times a week (mon, wed, fri). I do one hour on the treadmill at about 2 miles an hour at a 2.0 incline. They have the pulse sensors so I push it to keep my heart rate in the 150's and every ten minutes I'll ramp up the speed and the incline for 5 minutes. It's a great workout for me. Then I spend an hour doing weight lifting. I'm thinking of adding another day of cardio on sat or sun. I'd love to do the elliptical but it destroys me after just a few minutes. :) it's very disheartening but I'll keep pluggin away. 3 miles in 30 min on the elliptical, Alexandra?? WoW! :)

I am pre-op, but once I made the decision that I was going to change my ways, I hopped on my elliptical and am doing about 2.5 miles in 30 minutes. With a moderate incline but fairly low resistance. I want to be able to keep doing this once my surgery is done, so I've been working hard at getting into the routine and now about 1.5 months down the road, I HAVE to exercise or it drives me crazy! :)

Hi Virginia,

I started about 20 pounds more than you and started slow at the gym. looks like you are way ahead of me there ... there was NO WAY i could do an hour of anything until just recently.

as for the elliptical ... it was truly my nemesis ... i went on here and there and was able to last MAYBE 8 minutes at a time. but i finally sucked it up an dchallenged myself for 15 mins. i went for 15 mins and 1 second and got off that stupid machine as quickly as i could. i then looked at my heart rate monitor and discovered i burned almost 300 cals in 15 mins!!!! whoa baby!! yesterday was my all time 'record' i was on that stupid machine (we have a love hate relationship) for 45 mins in the morning and then went again for 60 mins in the afternoon. i burned almost 1800 cals yesterday!!! (was on the bike and strength training as well)..

sooo ... to make a long story short (is that possible??) the elliptical is a brilliant work out but it takes some getting used to. make sure you adjust the incline and resistance down to 1 if that is an option (my gym's machines start out w/ a 10 incline - youch!!). go for 2 mins the first day and then just steadily increase your time.

you are doing very well!! keep up the excellent work!!

Thanks for the encouragement, losingjusme! It's good to know the elliptical is beatable...and I can TOTALLY understand the whole love/hate thing.

I have a bad knee, so the workout I'm doing on the treadmill is starting to take it's toll and I will have to move to the elliptical soon I think. It's so funny though because I have to go so slow on the elliptical to keep my heart rate where it should be, that the machine thinks I'm pausing and will stop the stats. I don't know how anyone does that thing, but I will keep at it.

I know what you mean about the calories burned! Yesterday I was doing the trailblazer treadmill program and did a max of 2mph and a 10.0 incline. OMG that incline! felt like I was trudging through quicksand, but it was racking up the calories burned. Still I only did it for 20 minutes! then it was 40 minutes doing manual. Lost another pound and it's great to see the scale moving again, even if it's only a little. :)

I am on a training program where M, T I run 40 minutes, Saturday I run for distance ( 4 miles next week, then maintain that for 3 weeks, then I go to 5 miles...), T and F I cross train by hiking or doing stepping.

So... that is my time. I like having the program as it takes my guess work out of what I am going to do. I do not have a treadmill, so I run outside... which is a bit challening because I live in the Arctic (snowing today!!)

you can do some MILD walking now, do not push yourself. this time is for healing.

then when you visit your surgeon in a few days, ask them when you can start exercising.

congrats on being banded.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
