Surgery same day as husband?

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled to have surgery on Sept. 24th. My husband is still waiting on approval, which should come in by Monday. We're thinking it might be a good idea to do the procedure the same day that way we can follow the pre and post op diets together and take the time off together and whine about the pain together.

But, I'm a little nervous about doing it the same day, because I had laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis years ago and I really needed help for a few days to move around. I was in a lot of pain. It was an outpatient procedure, so I went home the same day, which probably is why.

He's 6'5" and 400 lbs. I can't help him sit up from bed, especially if I'm still in pain. We don't have any family near us, so we're kinda on our own,

Has anyone had this done with a spouse at the same time? Or, did you really rely on your spouse to help you the first several days?

My husband and I were sleeved. The doctor recommended 2 weeks between our surgery in case of a problem. I had no problem and was released in less than 24 hours and hardly felt I had surgery. He had a catheter/prostate problem and spent 4 days in the hospital. Went home with a catheter and in a lot of pain.

We went in expecting no problem. I just stayed on mushy food 2 extra weeks so everything has worked out great. I have lost 60 lbs, he has lost 90.

BTW, we had no pain at home, relaxed a day and went shopping. I needed no help whatsoever. It was almost as if I thought they pretended to do surgery on me LOL. Good luck!

I think you should wait. My husband ended up having the full surgery where they open you up, was in the hospital for 4 days and needed me to dress his wound for 3 weeks. I couldnt have done that even if I had no complications because of the bending over & doing everything for him for 3 weeks. But he had a Lap Band and they thought they could do it the easy before he went in but we knew it wasnt a guarantee. Good Luck

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
