June 16th Surgery - 5 Days Post-op

Recommended Posts

All went well with the surgery (Sleeve and hernia repair). Was in the hospital 2 days. I will tell you it was much more difficult than I thought it would be and I am still slow moving and having a lot of pain on the left side where the doc said he cut (lap instrument) through the muscle. I have to be careful because it is difficult to get up sometimes, it hurts if I am down to low or laying down and get up the wrong way.

I still have made attempts to keep moving and walk outside - but I read somewhere here 30 - 45 minuets a day. Is that total? Or all at once?

It is hard to hear how people are out and about and moving with no problem. I honestly feel physically venerable and weak, and that being said I know the worst is behind me for sure! :)

I don't' have problems with Water or liquids (Yeay!!) and my doctor has me having things other than Clear Liquids (like Soups pureed) so the variety is nice.

The best part is all is really well. I know things will settle and I will feel better soon. Everyone is different. I don't need to be super woman, but I was hoping I would be a little more resilient than this.

I was so nervous before surgery - I read so much about what could go wrong and the truth of it is that (other than a slower recovery than I would like) it all is really okay. I was a Pre-op reading the Post-op forum like crazy looking for outcomes.

It is crazy how quickly the time has gone by - the two weeks before surgery felt like forever. The pre-op diet was rough. But I stuck to it and did loose 18 pounds.

And now here is to the next chapter... :)

Congrats and be nice to yourself...you will heal in your own time. I'm in the early stages (1st apt with surgeon on 07 July) and I truly appreciate your honesty...

Congrats! I'm 8 weeks out and feel like my old self until it's time to eat and I can only eat a very small amount. Down 30lbs which is great for me.

It is nice to know that all is well and you are gaining all your milestones well after the surgery. It is good you are keeping a positive attitude. It is too early to think that you'll be running around.Take one step at a time and wait for full recovery before you start moving around as usual.

I had surgery the same day as you!

A support garment might help you with the incision pain. So will using a small pillow.

There is one incision I have to literally hold when I get up and down, so I am really mindful of how I move. I take it slow getting up and down, and ease into my sleeping position. There's no race.

I was too weak and exhausted to walk the first few days, but now I can go out and take a walk without any issues. If you can't walk, try to move as much as you can even if you have to walk the length of the living room repeatedly.

I got sleeved June 18... I have had trouble getting Protein in... The first few days all I drank was about 1bottle Water ... I tried a Protein Shake drinking it slowly for almost all day but that still was only 25g of protein... Do you ladies have any suggestions??

You will not get it in right away. Getting all the Fluid and protein takes time. My dr wasn't concerned about the protein for about 2 weeks after surgery. As long as I kept trying to stay hydrated I was doing good. There were days all I could do was the shakes. It takes time.

Congrats on your surgery! Know that you are not alone with the discomfort. I read too much post surgery about folks that had no problems, it got me really down. But as I looked more, there were folks like us. It was weird but on day 7 or 8, suddenly I could sit up with preparing for the inevitable pain and I could finally laugh again.

I think what you are feeling may be normal for you. Every journey is different. But it's a cool one to see "dreams" come true. :D

Yeah I'm finally able to get all my Protein in... I'm just struggling with 64 oz of Water drinking it an oz at a time. Very frustrating. Also I cant tell when i'm full so I think i've been under eatting or should I say sipping. Am I alone on this?

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
