Is it possible to get too much protien in one day?

Recommended Posts

I'm on my 6 month preop diet and trying to learn to pay attention to calories, protien, carbs, etc. I bought some Isopure protien drinks (clear, ready to drink kind) with 40 g of protien and zero carbs. I had a great day with the diet today and I was going to have a 6" flatbread from subway for dinner. I'm using myfitnesspal.com to keep track of my food intake. My food log today (including planned dinner) shows that I'm under in calories, carbs, fat, sodium, and sugar but I'm at 100+ g of protien. Is it possible to have too much protien? I got the Isopure drinks because before that I was not reaching my protien goals but I was way over in all other categories trying to get enough protien. How do you balance this?

I'm definitely going to ask the nutritionist next time but I'd like to hear input from patients here as well.

I'm not sure but would be interested in what the NUT has to say!

Not really. The idea that we can only metabolize X grams of Protein at a time has been pretty much debunked. Just know that post surgery, you will have to really work up to and exceed your Protein goals. You won't come out of surgery chunking down 60-100 grams of protein.

ETA in answer to your question, just focus on protein. All I EVER Counted was protein, since the rule is PROTEIN FIRST, that should not be a problem. As your sleeve heals, you will realize more capacity and you'll be able to eat more things, but your sleeve only holds 4-6 oz of food at a time. It'll take you a while to build up to eating a lot of protein a day. At 18 months out I honestly just barely make my protein count everyday and some days I can only make it if I drink two shakes.

Beachgurl, which flavors of the Isopure do you like? I have thought about trying them but they are pretty pricey and I wasn't sure if I would like them.

yes, it is possible, especially if you are restricting your carbohydrates.

They certainly don't taste like Kool-aid. But, they are drinkable. They leave a papery feeling in your mouth for a few seconds so they take some getting used to. The flavors aren't bad, I like the alpine punch and orange. The grape taste like smelly feet. Those are the only flavors I've been able to find so far. I'd like to try the passion fruit. I stocked up today at GNC because they were $4.89 with member price and buy 3 get 1 free on top of that. So I spent like $30 on 8. It would cost me a lot more in food to make up for that much protien.

All the info from the CDC is also based on the average normal person.

If you've had any of the wls, your needs and guidelines ARE different.

To the original poster...no, your body will only use so much at each sitting, and you'll find that the post op body processes everything different. Its proven that our systems are not able to fully process and use the nutrients we give it..(hence the need for the Calcium citrate versus Calcium carbonate just for an example)

I asked my NUT this very thing yesterday and she said no unless you get over 100 grams on a consistent basis because I have gone over 80 a couple of times.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
