Hello everyone. I had gastric bypass surgery on May 19, and thankfully no complications so far. I was discharged from the hospital the day after surgery. Right now some of my stitches are sticking through and that is really annoying, but the incisions all seem to be pretty well healed.

I started on "mushy food" and I have been tolerating them we'll, but have been finding that once I eat I continue to get hungry the rest of the day. Most things I read and people I have spoke to said they do not have hunger, but that does not seem to be the case with me. My nutritionist thinks I need more Fluid but I am already drinking almost 3 liters a day. Has anyone else experienced this? I also have been craving foods the last couple of days. Am nervous that is hunger and cravings are happening this quickly I may not be successful long term. Any thoughts or advise?

So far I have lost 19 pounds since surgery and about 10 pounds pre-op. I am moving in the right direction, but I am still scared that I may have put myself through all this and I might fail!

Thanks for "listening". I appreciate any words of wisdom.

I have not had surgery yet but I've researched it extensive both medically and reading real people's exprience on blogs and through Youtube. Several people have mentioned something described as "Head Hunger" and they describe it as wanting food, having craving and feeling hunger BUT when they do give in and eat them exprience vomiting and feeling overly full. Maybe this is what your experiencing. I'm not sure, as I said. I'm still post op! I hope I kinda-sorta-helped! I hope you find your answer :)

I know I how you feel! I, too, thought there was going to be no more hunger. Turns out that isn't the case with everyone. Once I left the hospital I was dying of real hunger. I called me doc and she said it was normal. Moved me to full liquids and it seems to be holding me. But, I need to put "food" in me every 2-3 hours. I can't take much in and by the end of the day I'm under 500 calories and I am diligent about keeping my Protein high.

I think you're doing great! Everybody and every body are totally different. I even tried a quarter size bite of bread that I chewed up very well and didn't get sick. So, I doubt I'll have anything that I will never be able to have again. So, I know that I must do major Portion Control, eat slowly, and limit my sugar.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
