4 weeks out, did you get to lift?

Recommended Posts

I was told at surgery to wait for 6 weeks before doing anything besides walking (anything upper body). Then at my 4 weeks post op appt, I was cleared for doing anything I was comfortable with.

Good luck!

I have the band but it was 6 weeks till I had my clearance. Might be due to the port that's stitched to my abdominal wall. Be careful. Even though you feel like you can do it, you did just have major surgery. Is suggest to call your doc.

After 4 weeks I was cleared to do weights, I started off light/high reps until I became comfortable working out again.

I started lifting lightly about 3+ weeks post op, but was basically just going through the motions and to move around and do something other than walking all the time. My Dr didn't clear me until a little over 5 weeks post op, which at that point I started adding a little weight to my lifting. I wouldn't recommend it (light lifting at 3 weeks) for everyone and I was probably fairly lucky that I didn't injure myself. But since I had lifted for years and nursed injuries and recoveries from other past surgeries, I knew how to not push it in the weightroom until I was ready and cleared. Ex: at 3 weeks I would just squat the barbell which for me was basically so light I couldn't feel the weight so I knew I wasn't really straining. It allowed me to stretch and move around more than anything.

I just went to my 4-week appointment today, and the doctor cleared me for anything I was comfortable with. He actually suggested I begin with light weights

My doc cleared me at four weeks for anything. Prior to that I'd been lifting with just 5# weights (under my 10# weight restriction).

I was told six weeks at my one week post op appointment. Now I'm just shy of 2 months post op and my whole body is sore today from weight lifting yesterday. LOL! I'm still easing back into it, lifting more conservatively than I would have before!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
