Catheter & can't lay flat

Recommended Posts

My surgery was at 11am today. I feel pretty great except for my left shoulder. If I lay flat my shoulder kills!!!! I am sleeping in the recliner tonight. Has this happened to anyone?

Also, I ended up in the ER because I could not urinate. Now I have a foley for the next day or so. I believe it has to do with the fact that I had a bladder sling a few years ago. Has anyone else had experience with this?

Hey CcPc not sure which type of surgery you had...but just wanted to say Congrats on WLS and welcome to your new journey. I didn't have any issues like you have, but wanted to wish you well with that foley. years ago I had some surgery that caused major damage to my bladder...wore a foley for almost a year...so I know how uncomfortable they are...best wishes...hang in there and get better soon!!! :)

Oh oops. I'm new :) thank you!

I had lapband surgery. Hopefully the cath will come out in a day or two. It's not pleasant. I can't imagine having one for a year :(

Welcome to the otherside. The first 3 -4 days are the worst, but it gets much better. Try to move around and that helps. I am almost 4 weeks out and it has been wonderful.

I had a lot of trouble peeing. Even with the IV fluids in me I didnt pee for close to 14 hours. Had to go, felt the urge, it wouldn't come out. The morphine and anesthesia slow down your organs, it took me 4-5 days to pee easily again.

Got the catheter out and was able to go. I almost did a happy dance! And I'll be getting the gas x.

I've been moving as much as possible. The shoulder pain has definitely lessened today. That was the worst. Nothing else has really bothered me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
