If you have more to lose, do you lose faster?

Recommended Posts

I am going into surgery (21 days!) with a higher BMI. I'm 5' 1/2" and currently I'm 266 lbs. My BMI is about 50. Since I have so much to lose (over 50% of my body weight), I am wondering if I will lose weight faster. Sometimes when I look at other people's stats, it seems like those who were heavier lost more weight, faster.

I know everyone's different, too. I was just wondering if this was anyone else's experience all other things being equal. Assuming 100% compliance with diet & exercise...

I thinks it depends on how far you are from your goal. Some people are naturally slower losers, which is not a bad thing! It gives your skin the opportunity to stay caught up.

For me, the farther I was from goal the faster I lost. So like the first month, starting at 296, I lost about 25 lbs. the next months were between 15-20, then down to about 10 a month. Now that I'm within 20 lbs of my final goal, it's going really slow!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
