3 Jun surgery date but worried about a1c to high

Recommended Posts

I'm going on very low carb starting today to get A1c as low as possible. Ive been on 3 diabetes meds Levemir 100 units, Januvia, and metformin. Still had A1c of 12 . Im worried they will put off surgery till is lower. Is there anyone that has experienced a delay because of this. This is the main reason i'm getting the surgery to get off meds.

Hi I was on metformin and Victoza and I got my A1C down under 7 for surgery which was required.

I would ask your surgeon what they require your A1C be to have the surgery.

I wanted say that I stopped all diabetes meds the day of surgery and I now have an A1C of 4.7 last time checked.

Good luck with your surgery and getting your A1C down.

I was originally scheduled for surgery on Feb 13, 2014, but it was delayed due to my A1C being 10.7. With a lot of hard work, I was able to get it down to 8.7 in about 5 weeks. My surgery is now scheduled for May 22. My surgeon won't operate if a patients A1C is 9.5 or higher.

My A1c was 10.8 in March. The surgeon wants it lower than 10 in order to do surgery. I had rechecked a couple of weeks ago and it was 9.8. They did my chart review and I passed. Now I am just waiting for insurance company to give me an answer. I called them and they said it would probably be Monday before they have a decision. I am confident I will get approved but I still worry about the denial stuff.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
