staple line and dry heaves

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery yesterday....so far so good other than some bout with nausea which suck! A few minutes ago I dry heaved 3 times and am terrified that I could have damaged the staple line....having your stomach spasm and contract can't be good for it

Nausea comes with no prior warning....one minute I'm fine and next I am trying to grab the puke bowl. Only drinking Water and broth so its, luckily not too gross

I violently vomited for 5 days no stop after the surgery and didn't do any damage. Let your surgeon know if you aren't at the hospital still , but I think you should be fine

Wow, SparkleCat that was fast!! Congrats! I hope I don't have to deal with nausea, I will be asking for meds. Feel better soon. Keep us posted

I had issues with the pain meds right after surgery. I dry heaved for hours and then puked up blood. It scared the crap out of me.....I was fine. :)

I was on a constant dose of Zofran the first few days after surgery and then needed it in the mornings a few more days. There's also a patch called Scopolamine that helps a lot too. Call your doc, they DO NOT want you heaving at all.

Thanks yall! I'm still the hospital and saw my surgeon right after it happened, he didn't seem very concerned but wanted me to stay another night just in case...had a lot of drugs and haven't had another incident.

The heaves hurt bad! Scared the bejesus out of me! While I wouldn't wish nausea on anyone, I've got to say it's comforting to know I'm not the only one

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
