Banded but not losing weight

Recommended Posts

I under stand exactly where you are coming from. I was banded on jan21,07 and since that I've only lost 21lbs. that was the first month. I can not eat no where near as much as I use to eat I exercise daily and still no difference. I paid out of pcket and I'm so very discusted that I haven't had more sucess than that! I had my first fill on march 9,07 and still nothing!!!!!!!!!! When I consult with my doctor he said I wasn't eating enough. Heck I thought that was the idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Disappointed to the fullest. Especially when I speak to the young ladies that got banded the same day I was banded and they have lost 40-55lbs. Since our surgery.I don't want to think that I've paid all of that money to only lose 21 lbs. I feel like I'm just going to be FAT the rest of my LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:think

Losing weight with the band is much like losing the weight with any diet - you WILL HIT PLATEAUs - you need to let you body get used to it's new weight - for some people that takes 2 months to 6 months. But you just stick to it and eventually you'll see the weight start dropping again. Those plateaus are what screwed us ALL over when we tried regular diets before. We'd get all frustrated and give up. The band is to help us get THROUGH those plateaus and not sabotage ourselves and re-gain all the weight we lost and then some more! Stick to it!

I am happy to report after a very long plateau, I dropped 3 lbs this morning. I have no idea if it's because I did something different, or it was just time.

I went to the dr. yesteday to discuss this slow weight loss. He agreed that I don't need a fill. I get full really fast. He is going to do a resting metobolic

test which is supposed to tell me how many calories I need to be eating to lose.

I know exactly how you feel. I paid out of pocket for this too. I have to keep telling myself that by now I would have gained more weight.

I think the important thing with the band is to not eat badly and get disgusted if we don't lose. That was my problem b4 banding. I would eat right and not lose and think I might as well eat what I want, I am not losing

anyway. The band has helped me control my portions.

denise822,

I'm so glad you lost. My mother always tells me good things are worth waiting for. I'm going to ask my dr. about that test. What do they do?

I will let you know tomorrow after I have the test. I am not sure how it works, but someone told me it's really not all that accurate. I hope they are wrong.

I get free aftercare for a year after my surgery, so at least I am making my dr. do some work!

Hi Rainbow Days,

Your story sounds alot like mine. I was banded 1/9/07. Have had a fill in March and to date have only lost 5 lbs.

I don't get the feeling of full. I have had a few things get stuck. I notice that happens when I don't pay attention (like eating and talking with people).

I'm having another fill on May 25th. Hope it helps.

It is very disappointing and I always feel people are wondering why I'm not losing weight.

I know I still can eat to much.

Any help out there?

Reading this thread, all I can say is... wow. I was so disappointed in myself thinking I wasn't losing fast enough, blaming myself, etc. It's nice to know I'm not alone. Strange thing is I've dropped dress sizes from a 20 to 16 so that's encouraging. I just want to get to Onederland!

I guess we all lose at different rates anyway.

I go in for my 2nd fill 5/17, hopefully it will get me that much closer to my 'sweet spot'.

Congratulations to everyone. Keep on working at it! We will get there!

That's why I didn't tell all that many people that I got the band. I didn't want people asking me about it.

I had that resting metobolic test. They plug up your nose with a thing like a close pin and put a tube in your mouth and you breathe for 20 min in and out from your mouth. It was hard to do. I felt like I was going to choke. It determined in order for me to lose weight, I need to eat 1,000 calories per day.

Do you have a dietician to talk to about what maybe you should eat. I'm thinking of going back to mine. She's very stricked

I got my band on Dec 27th 2006 and have only lost 20 pounds. I got my first fill on Feb 23rd. Since the fill I have lost and gained the same 3 pounds...that nasty 3 pounds that seems to haunt other people as well. My roommate was banded 2 months before me and has lost over 60 pounds! She never goes to the gym...and I feel like I live there! One of the most frustrating things is that because I am working out so hard, my appetite is revved up and I feel hungry ALL the time! I am still trying to make wise food choices, but I have very little restriction from my first fill. I am going in for my second fill tomorrow and HOPE something will change.

I wanted to know if anyone is still experiencing the shoulder and neck pain that was only suppose to happen immediately after surgery...from pressure on a nerve or something??? Does anyone else have that?? It only seems to hurt when I am hungry...but since that is all the time...it is killing me!!! I have talked to my doctor about it, but he didn't have an answer for me...so we will talk about it when I see him tomorrow, but I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced that??

Hi again guys.

debacct56 I saw your response and yes you do sound as if you are experiencing the same effects as me. I had my 2nd fill on the 4th of May, so just las Friday and I don't notice a difference. Like you I have had a few things get stuck but generally I can eat whatever I want and it will go down. I really am convinced the surgeon forgot to fit my band while I was in the operating theatre lol.

I have complained that I still don't have restriction and that means I can have another fill done free of charge. I am waiting for my appointment.

The annoying thing is that after my first 2 fills I felt as if there was a lot of restrictin but 2 days later it was back to usual.

I know people give good advice like chew slowly and put your fork down but that is the same advice I was given prior to having the band and if I could have done that then and controlled the amount I ate I could have saved £8,000 and had a few Caribbean holidays, instead I'm stuck in Scotland, in the pouring rain, and I am still fat!!!

I am hoping that fill number 3 will make a difference. Fingers crossed. It is either that or I will have to self restrict if I want to get the weight off.

To everyone - keep your chin up guys, we will all get there in the end, I am convinced of it. Keep the dream alive and lets stick together, no one is alone out there.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
