Insurance coverage provided for ALL WLS? Inside scoop:

Recommended Posts

Hi. Should bariatric surgery be covered by all insurance carriers nationally? If interested, here is a blurb in The Obesity Society's (TOS) newsletter (emailed yesterday to medical professional attendees of the Obesity Week conference last November). In short, the medical community is working to have WLS considered a standard part of medical care in the fight against the disease of obesity, and to get it covered by all insurers. Just an FYI re: the ongoing, internal discussion:
Capitol Update: Campaigns for Consistent Medical Coverage of Bariatric Surgery (TOS)
In late March, leaders of the Obesity Care Continuum (OCC) participated in a meeting with key staff from the HHS Office of Health Reform and CMS Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight (CCIIO) to discuss inconsistent coverage of bariatric surgery in a number of states across the country.

Find out more about TOS's efforts in Washington last month...in the April Capitol Update here.
Excerpt [bold/italics, mine]: "...public and private health plans need to follow suit and embrace coverage of evidence-based obesity treatment avenues such as intensive behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery so that those affected may have access to the full continuum of care for this complex and chronic disease."

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I believe once the nomenclature of disease is established the potential treatments follow.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
