Esophageal Problems

Recommended Posts

It may have already been addressed in another question, but I couldn't find anything

I have my surgery in Aug of 2009 and everything went great. I lost 100 lbs in 2 years and was able to tighten my skin as I lost weight. When I got the lap band my concern was how often things got stuck in my throat. My doctor stated that it's normal for the first few months because we are adjusting to eating the smaller sizes and that we'd need to learn how to chew and let things go down. Soups got stuck. EVERYTHING got stuck and I was constantly throwing up the food I just ate. They loosed the band and things got better. Every now and then (about twice a week) things will get stuck still because I wasn't thinking.

BUT now I noticed about a week ago my throat burns when I drink certain items. I do get heartburn, which is common side effect. But today broccoli got stuck and when it came back up there were small traces of blood and it felt like some of my esophagus was coming out too. I have an appointment to see my doctor tomorrow, but does anyone have any insight to this? I've been freaking myself out online because everything I look at says its early signs of Esophageal Cancer, which has a low survival rate and rapid spreading... Again hopefully just freaking my self out.

Please any insight.

Anytime you pass blood or regurgitate blood you should call your doctor or surgeon. Nothing to mess around with? Could be just an ulcer? Could also be band erosion which is very dangerous. Don't waste time, call now.

Don't just to conclusions just yet; see your Dr right away, and please be sure to let us all know your results.

There are other reasons than "C" that can result in bleeding.

I just had the same problem. Although this was my first time. I got stuck today and the hours afterward proceeded with the pbing but this time it moved to acid reflux and I couldn't sleep. I kept forcing spitting up the acid reflux that I started to see blood in the spit up. No pain in my stomach, but the blood freaked me out. So I ran to emerg. Dr. Checked me out and said I gave myself "Mallory-Weise" tears. Which is basically tears from forcing myself to spit up the acid reflux. It will heal on it's own in a few days, but man o man what a lesson to learn. I am starting over from scratch drinking only liquids and so on. I'm just glad there isn't more damage. And I do know that it could have been way worse.

Well I couldn't take anymore and went in to the weight loss clinic. They had to take all 2.5 cc's. I have to start all over but man o man what a relief. I felt instant relief and was able to drink Water after 2 days of absolutely nothing. I am now able to drink Protein Shakes and getting some energy back. I'm so glad I decided to call the weight loss clinic where they could help.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
