I had to be caffeine free for my doc to operate...all docs are different. I went thru withdrawals and it sucked.

I switched to Decaf after weening myself off the hard stuff - it took two weeks to get down to decaf only. I did this prior to starting my two week pre-op diet because I didn't want to have to go thru both at the same time.

Post-op, I wasn't allowed coffee until week 4 and I had to pinkie promise the doc that I wouldn't go back to my old ways of 5-6 cups of strong coffee per day. I now have 1, sometimes 2 cups of real coffee and 1 or 2 cups of decaf per day.

I'm a Carmel Macchiato girl myself and had one yesterday - a small non-fat, sugar-free. It doesn't taste the same, but I did enjoy it.

I weaned myself off coffee prior to pre op diet.

As stated in a previous post, coffee dehydrates you. Coffee is also acidic which is not good for our stomachs.

The latest science shows that coffee will NOT dehydrate you. Any medical professional who tells you otherwise is probably behind on their journal reading. Here's a link to just one article about just one study (there are more) that debunks the whole "caffeine is dehydrating" myth:

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2014/01/13/262175623/coffee-myth-busting-cup-of-joe-may-help-hydration-and-memory

That said, you should always follow your surgical team's instructions and there are definitely other good reasons to cut back on or eliminate caffeine for sleevers.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
