Sleeved in October 2013...down 52 lbs. exercise regimen is a must.

The VSG procedure has been the best decision of my life (other than marrying the love of my life). It is truly up to me how successful the surgery will be. The numbers on the scale went steadily down and I felt that there was no need to exercise, but when I saw the numbers level off, I had to admit that exercise is a big part of this journey. 10, 15, or 20 minutes a day makes a big difference....and it is so much easier to move. Besides this website and the Big Book on the Gastric Sleeve, I rely heavily on my fitness Pal and my fitbit. These tools really keep me in check as far as nutrition, how much I move in a day and my weight. I think if I had started an exercise regimen earlier, I would probably be another 10 lbs. lighter already. So I am looking forward to the spring weather to motivate me. My Dr. told me that My goal should be to lose another 35 by my surgiversary and I am determined to meet that goal. These forums are so motivating and inspirational to me and the challenges such as the Easter challenge really help to keep me in the game. Thanks to everyone for all of your posts, comments and advice.

Way to go! I believe exercise is a key component in successful weight loss. Not just because it burns calories, but it also helps prevent muscle loss as your body loses weight. I know that my weight loss wouldn't have been as good if I hadn't been exercising on a regular basis. I had to find ways to continue burning calories at the same rate as I was right after surgery. Since I wasn't carrying around the extra weight, my body didn't have to work as hard to get around. I've only done walking as my primary exercise, but I do vary it up by going to walking tracks and park trails. I like a variety of hills and obsticals to keep things from getting boring. Back in October, I started wearing a backpack with a few books in it for added weight then got a weighted vest in November. The vest had the added benefit of working my core and leg muscles in a new way. It's hard to make a sharp turn with a 20 lb vest. :-P

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
