Newbie needs advice!?!?!?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was on March 11, 2014. The sleeve was wonderful but during surgery my esophagus tore. I spent five days in the hospital with no Water or food to drink strictly IV fluids. Tomorrow will be exactly one week after surgery and I have only lost 1 pound. Is this normal should I be losing more weight? I would have thought I would have lost more since I was not eating or drinking anything for five days. Can being on IV fluids and antibiotics around-the-clock call a stall at the beginning? Please enlighten me with your stories and advice I could really use the encouragement.......

Don't worry!! I was like 9 lbs heavier a few days out of surgery, and really didn't see a loss till a week out. The IV is keeping you really hydrated, etc...it will ALL drop off in a few days. I promise! I freak out too( just went thru a 2 1/2 week period where I only lost 3 lbs) I know it is easy to stress over, but it'll get better week after week.

Relax, every time they hung up one of those bags that was a few pounds. And it ain't likely much was exiting during that period. But it will now......very quick. The body is going to take awhile to adjust to all the trauma and get used to the new regimen your introducing now. It's just the body doing it's thing. ;)

I've read this over and over and over again, so it apparently is extremely normal to gain weight from those crazy hospital fluids and medications. No worries dear - you'll do WONDERFUL!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
