I had my gastric bypass November 21st 2013. I also had a heller myotomy with a fundiplication wrap for achalasia and hernia repair. My surgery is specialized so my time frame is off. I have had many issues and I am still not on solid foods (almost 4 months). Now I have been told I need to be on a TPN. Has anyone else had to go on TPN? How long did you have to be on it? Any information would be helpful and appreciated :)

What is that? I'm 2 months out and can't take even mushies. I have had to be ballooned twice in 8 days. .. 2 strictures

It's IV fluids and nutrition. I have been on fluids forever with unsuccessful attempts at purred food and solids. They can't balloon me because I have not healed enough and I have a high risk for rupture.

I had surgery November 25, 2013, so only a few days different. I just got out of the hospital and was placed on TPN for 21 days due to not eating. It was 'round the clock nutrition to say the least. Be prepared, they will have to insert a PICC line as the minerals are too harsh on the veins, but if you haven't ever had one, don't worry, they're not bad at all!

Thank you so much. No I have never had one. I am desperate to feel stronger and better. Do you know how long they stay in?

No problem! I just went through it and was scared crapless, didn't know what to expect. The PICC line can stay in for up to a year. The bad news is they do not like it to get wet, trust me, I got mine wet a couple times lol. The covers they give you to take a shower don't work so well, so you'll likely be resorting to "sponge baths". If you have any questions, feel free to PM me or ask here. They're threatening me with the TPN again because I'm still not eating. I had a really bad case of gastritis and a really large ulcer, I don't have any desire to eat, let alone the fear of eating!

Awww that's terrible I hope you get better soon. If you don't mind how long until the TPN helped you feel better? I am desperate to feel better lol

No worries, I'm on the mend! Honestly it took about 7 days before I started to feel better. Hope yours goes alot quicker! I needed alot of other things too, so that could have been a major factor too. Make sure you get out of bed and walk. I lost alot of surface feeling in my legs and they said that was a result of the TPN. Walking WILL help! Hope you feel better soon!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
