Thyroid Problems and Lapband

Recommended Posts

I am 3 weeks new to lapbandtalk.com and I enjoy coming online everyday to view the threads. All of you have been a tremendous help and encouragement to me as I prepare to be banded in May 2007. THANK YOU!!!!

I have searched and searched to see if anyone is talking about having thyroid problems. I have Hypothyroid which slows down my metablosim, and on a very low does of medication. I was wondering if anyone who has already been banded, have thyroid problems before being banded? If so, are you losing slowly, or it has not been a problem to lose weight since being banded? I am a little concern that if I am doing all I know to do not being banded, and I'm not loosing weight, if being banded will make a difference. HELP!!!!:help:

Thanks,

Joyful1

I was just banded.. I'm taking my thyroid medicine as normal every day. I break the lexovyl in half however to make sure it doesn't get stuck in the port. From what my regular m.d has said.. so long as I take my meds same time every day I should be fine.. if fact losing the weight may even help reduce the dose I take.

I was diagnosed hypothyroid about a year before being banded. I take Synthroid and my levels are well-managed. As far as I know, my thyroid issues have had no effect on my band experience, and so far my med levels have not had to be adjusted post-weight-loss (though I'm way overdue for testing, so that might change).

Thanks Alexandra!! I've seen your pics and you look great. Your response encourages me, because my thyroid is monitored often and is very stable also.

Thanks A Bunch,

I have hypothyroidism and take Synthroid and Cytomel daily without any problems. My thyroid condition is not completely under control, but it's better than it's ever been. And I don't believe that it is having a negative impact on my weight loss. I've been banded 11 weeks and I'm losing about 3 lbs a week, without exercise.

Joyful1,

I represent the other side of the coin. I have Hashimoto's syndrome; have had 1/2 my thyroid removed and am on Synthyroid and Cytomel daily. As far as symptoms go, I feel pretty well managed. However, the weight has been very slow to come off. Of course, you have to factor in the anti-depressant cocktail I take daily and give it a lot of credit for slow weight loss too.:faint:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
