3 month follow up with doc

Recommended Posts

I had my 3 month follow up with my doc this afternoon. I was kind of dreading the appointment - I'm in a stall and I'm feeling a bit down. I haven't lost weight in 18 days...well, I've been playing with the same pound for the past week or so.

So, here's what we discussed:

1. My weight loss is 49 pounds down since I first went to her (she is my local doc - I traveled out of the area for surgery, so her numbers are a bit different than mine). She is really happy with rate at which I'm losing; I said I wish I could feel really good about the rate. I want to lose it faster. She said the if you were to graph your loss, it wouldn't be linear, to expect more of a stair step. Lose, plateau, lose plateau, lose, plateau. Wash rinse repeat.

2. We talked about my brain and my want for faster loss. She encouraged me to go to the support group offered by the hospital. I know this, I just haven't made the effort to go. She also said I might want to think about counseling - It's probably not a bad idea.

3. My body fat percentage has reduced a little since my last visit 4 weeks ago. I've lost a little lean muscle mass, but not much. She wasn't concerned on either account.

4. She said I look a lot smaller and reminded me of the other signs of health NOT related to the scale. My clothes are looser - the jeans I bought just after Christmas are falling off. My blood pressure is lower than it's been in a really long time (112/75) and I've reduced my cholesterol by 30 points since November. She also reminded me that sometimes muscles will retain Water to help recover...something we should all keep in mind - water retention can affect us by 3-5 pounds in a day!

5. We talked about the Hair loss again - she said it should stop around the 6 month mark. She reminded me that whatever I lose due to the surgery will grow back. Be patient.

6. Stop weighing every day!!!! Weigh once per week at the most.

7. She's happy with my exercise - I've been doing 60-75 minutes 5-6 days per week. I need to add weight training. I have some aversion to weight training for some reason - I really need to get on that.

So, it was a good visit. I have some things to work on, mostly with my brain.

That's a good visit :) You are doing so well.

  • Yes, do weight training. I started it beginning of January. It is hard! And you stop losing on the scale while your body figures out what the heck you are doing to it, that's frustrating so be prepared. But you are building much needed muscle that will eventually increase your metabolism and make you so much stronger and healthier. I got a trainer and she's great.
  • I am just past 6 months and still losing hair, although I think the flood is slowing. Ick.
  • I agree about weighing too often. I'm trying to only weigh every 3 weeks or so now.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
