I am scheduled for my bypass on 2/17. I am looking for other vegans to help me. I am currently a vegetarian but want to make the jump to veganism when I have the surgery. Anyone know of any support groups or individuals willing to help? Thanks.

I am a vegetarian as well and am pre op, I heave considered veganism as well but since we need a lot of Protein early on I will probably wait until 6 months post op as I get a substantial amount of protein from dairy currently.

I am unaware of any support groups if you find one let me know! I mostly use my phone so I don't browse the web a lot.

I really like this topic! Thanks for starting it Kerry! I was a vegan before surgery. But since starting on this program last July, and especially since my RNY surgery on 12/10/13, I've had to increase my Protein with whey powders and other dairy (milk, cheese, etc.). I still can't handle eggs, so they're out. I've tried meats, poultry and fish also, since my surgery. I found that I can only tolerate a little white fish. I can't tolerate chicken at all. And beef and turkey ham are only tolerated in VERY tiny amounts. I haven't wanted to try any other animal products. I'm told by others that have had RNY that as time passes you can tolerate more of everything eaten before surgery. But I don't really care about meats. I know I'm only two months from my surgery. I'm hopeful that I'll eventually be able to use less dairy and more legumes for my protein. But I may not be able to do without dairy completely, since I have to get at least 80 grams of protein per day. I don't know that I can eat enough Beans, peas, and lentils to do it. I CAN say that split peas and all beans are MORE flavorful and tasty than before surgery! Who knew! I could give up the little fish, beef and turkey ham right now. I feel like I'm rambling now. I hope this rambling has helped you.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
