I could use some advice!

Today is the day I had my surgery 4 weeks ago (1/5/14). I have three issues, perhaps you veterans may be able to help me?

Problem #1: Since then - I cannot get liquids in. I have a hard time getting anything in. It's painful, and I feel like there is a lump or obstruction in the back of my shoulders - centered, not in shoulders as the gas was at first, and it's all about eating/drinking. So far, I found out that you can throw up even if you haven't eaten anything but three or four spoonfuls. This feeling also tells me that I will throw up if I take even one more spoonful, and I have, which is scary and terrible since this. (3 times throwing up is almost my lifetime of throwing up, so it's weird for me.) I cannot get the suggested food in, it's viscously painful and leaves me in terrible shape for over a half hour sometimes. So - recap: not able to drink more than 24 oz. daily, and nowhere near the food suggested.

Problem #2: I have no energy. None. I mean, I have a hard time getting out of bed, and doing anything more than sitting on the couch. I only have three kids at home now, but still - three is enough for destruction, trust me. I have been swamped in laundry, the floors look like I blew up my cat and dogs, and I'm really not sure you'll stay disease-free in this house anymore. I bought the B-12 shots have sub-lingual B-12, still - to no energy. Has anyone else had this?

Problem #3: This is the most dangerous, but I now am under the care of a wound care specialist. All my surgical openings are - open. They're deep, and ghastly looking. The nurses at the hotel in TJ for Jerusalem Hospital knew, they got really nervous, then called in a superior, he came in - after rapid-fire Spanish discussion - he said, no it's fine, just go home. Don't worry. Behind him, the other two nurses were looking like they didn't agree, and motioned so. Not the most pleasant way to go home all the way to the east coast. Now - I have deep, deep open wounds, they're going to be disgustingly large and will never heal in any way other than Frankenstein. I see the would care specialist every three days, and they're still debating cutting them all open and re-stitching them for five new scars, I suppose lesser than the big open pits - but no consensus on that. At least I'm under medical care. So much for not telling anyone.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!!!!

I'm only 12 weeks out but it sounds as if you need to see another dr and have your sleeve checked out. If your dr there let you leave with the wounds you have, I wouldn't trust his job on the inside of my body either. The no energy and tiredness are provably a side effect of hunger and thirst. Your body needs Water and food to function. If it were me I would go to dr immediately.

The first problem sounds like stricture, which would lead into the second problem. I'm no Dr, but that's what it sounds like. Sounds like you're already getting looked at for the third item, but if you have stricture you need to get it fixed.

Thanks for your advice. I will look into those suggestions. My husband had the same surgery right after I did. He is doing well and is keeping an eye on me.

Gallbladder pain can cause pain in between shoulder blades. I had gallstones and it felt as if I had a painful knotted muscle there.

I am not sure if this will help but when I tried to drink cold Water after surgery it caused a lot of pain and it made my throat feel like there was something in it. Drinking warm Water made it easier.

I am having the same problems minus the open wounds. I can't even get 24 oz of liquids in. I am 4 weeks post op. Was rehospitalized once already. Just want to sleep all the time. Have a follow up Wednesday. Thinking about taking medical leave from work cause I am missing so many days. I am regretting this surgery so much.

On topic #2 I am also tired all the time. I cant get anything done. Just before my second appointment after surgery they had me do more blood work. They said I have a Vitamin B-1 defeniciency. It can cause alot of problems. My eyes are weakening, my balance, I am forgetting stuff and all I want to do is sleep. I have to do more blood work before my visit in March. I have also looked up foods that are rich in B-1.I spoke to someone today that it took her over a year to correct this. I hope not. But read up on a B-1 defeniciency do that you can identify the systems and ask your doctor to check this for you. And as for your other conditions I agree with the person who said get another doctor.

i had a lot of trouble with the drinking which is our food source in the first few weeks too so don't help!

I had the room temp cold Water problem the whole Water nausea thing is horrible!
I made 2 thermoses one with Soup in it another with tea (English tea not sweet tea and such) and would alternate between a couple of mouthfuls of Soup or tea whenever I woke up and had a dry throat.

I did all the food stages with a lot of pain and puking throughout went hospital a few times thought I popped my staples after a really hard puking session followed by bad pain I didn't but it felt like it!

rang them a lot because I had issues they made me go all the way back to Clear liquids and work forward again because I was just still swollen and had a small sleeve pouch.

some peoples internal swelling doesn't go down as quick as others this doesn't help with the statistical "where you should be at this stage" thing.

didn;t have the open wound thing so can't help there from personal but it seems your getting that checked out at least.

Fluid intake isn;t just water they say water water water to make sure your not drinking soda booze etc but Hot drinks like me with my tea which is Decaf is fine its a Fluid and will keep you hydrated and actually feels nice to your still healing swollen stomach.

I was tired for months you had a major op its not just the outer body areas they went into thats bruised and swollen you have a lot of internal bruising and swelling from them poking around in there your body is taking as much time as it needs to rest and heal after such a ordeal.

we also can't eat solid food or any where near as much food as we used too or even close to what a "normal" person would eat after surgery so it wipes us out a bit as our body isn;t taking nutrients from our food to help burn while healing so we are just running on pretty much empty and taking most of what we need from the stored fat cells.

it can be really scary after the op not seem normal seem like no one else has or did have these issues and yours has gone horribly wrong and make you freak out, as long as you go and make sure your healing a lot of what your experiencing is normal.

Thanks, this is her husband. She is eating and drinking a little better. I am taking her to our GP in the morning for a second opinion. The wounds are not getting better. Will keep you posted.

Me too! I had the surgery right after her and am doing fine so thank God I am able to take care or her. They are saying at the Wound Care Center it will take eight weeks to heal. The nurses in Mexico argued about at least one of her wounds. I wish I had known better and dealt with it on the spot. I guess I couldn't focus well enough. She is everything to me. Thank you again for your prayers.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
